Added tops_mr.dds doesn't work?

I've downloaded a mod and it's great but it has a really shiny t-shirt. When I looked inside the file there was a 'tops.dds' but no 'tops_mr.dds' so I created one repacked the file. In game there is no difference though, do I have to do something to get the game to recognise the added tops_mr.dds file?
