Not really something that can just be explained, there's a lot to learn. Here's a thread I made asking about modding for models and stuff http://smacktalks.org/forums/topic/62826-x-rey3ds-modding-tutorials/

I worked through my first mod after watching some of the tutorial videos provided and asked some questions as to what I was doing wrong when things didn't work. You can learn from my mistakes by reading through the thread.

I can also PM you a bunch of stuff about texture modding if you'd like, which is a good first step to take if you're getting into modding.
