4 Life Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 (edited) I'm having trouble with the normal file of Shawn Michaels' bottoms working properly. I've used his tights and bottoms on the mod I'm working on the tights have worked fine but the bottoms are giving me trouble. The image inside the normal file is yellow rather than blue. When I just put the unedited normal file in the texture file, the bottoms appear but of course there are a load of lumps and bumps I don't want. However, when I edit the file, it's weird - it's like the bottoms are made of glass, they're clear but I can see the outline, and the logos are on the bottoms but the material is see-through. I tried changing it blue at first, then noticed the problem. Tried leaving it yellow and getting rid of lumps and bumps as I usually would, but still got the problem. I've checked the format and it's DXT5, I've made sure I saved it as a DXT5. Never come across one of these yellow normal files before so dunno if they have to be treated differently. Thanks for any help EDIT: So I think we've established that it's the alpha file that's giving me problems - every time I edit it, this problem occurs. Not sure if there's some sort of particular setting I have to apply for it to stop doing this? Edited August 16, 2016 by 4 Life Quote

4 Life Posted August 15, 2016 Author Posted August 15, 2016 Hi Mate, fill the blue alpha channel with black and that's it Thanks for replying mate. Tried it and it hasn't worked, lemme just make sure I've done this right - had it open in Photoshop, went into channels. There are 5 channels - RGB, Red, Green, Blue and Alpha 1. Opened the Blue layer and filled it in black before saving as DXT5. Sound right? Quote

I tried it a few weeks ago also with Shawn Michaels (i am working on a few retro Shawn Michaels attires 1992-1993) and it works properly. Quote

Literally all I wanna do is just get rid of all the bobbles, but it seems like every time I touch the file it stops working properly. I've looked closer and the logos and stuff are still on the bottoms, but the rest of it is see-through. Odd. Quote

I'd have to download some screen capture software hehe, might do that if I can't solve the problem here. All I'm literally doing is; opening the file; using the paintbrush tool to scrub out the bobbles and stuff; editing the alpha layer to get rid of all the shiny bobbles; then save. Pretty much it, not doing anything I don't normally do so I guessed that trying your tip would fix it. I might start with a fresh file and try again. Edited August 15, 2016 by 4 Life Quote
4 Life Posted August 15, 2016 Author Posted August 15, 2016 .. Found the problem I believe. Seems like every time I edit the alpha layer, it fucks up. Problem is, the alpha is bright white so by default, way too shiny. Did you edit this layer without problems? Quote

That's how I've been doing it as well more so Deleting backgrounds from logos and then Putting them into the alphas. I use the Stamp clone tool to keep the normal wrinkles, etc now. Quote

Just with this file, every time I touch the alpha it causes this weird issue. Did you edit this particular file without getting any problems Dennis? Literally all I'm doing is making the alpha darker and it screws up, if I don't touch it and leave it white it works just fine but it's too shiny. Edited August 15, 2016 by 4 Life Quote

Just want to take a look at exactly which part is giving issueshttp://www9.zippyshare.com/v/1xqWjs8y/file.htmlHopefully you folks can pinpoint what's going wrong, I'm at a loss All the attires I've made and tonnes of normals and alphas I've manipulated, this one just isn't working for me even after blacking out the Blue channel as advised by Dennis. Every time I touch that alpha layer it just doesn't work. Quote

hovathagod32 Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 This problem is still unsolved if anyone has any input!i had this problem, honestly I desaturated the blue normal just color overlay'd it to match the gold/yellowish color. I was editing ring ropes, though so there was no alpha or any real detail Quote

It changed the whole file to a greenish color instead of a gold-like color that the original _g.dds file was. so i just recolored the _n.dds and named it _g.dds overwriting the original one. these particular normals didn't have alphas, though or much detail, so trying it my way may result differently, but it's worth a shothttp://smacktalks.org/forums/topic/63336-how-do-you-create-the-normal-files-that-are-listed-_gdds/ Edited August 16, 2016 by hovathagod32 Quote

4 Life Posted August 16, 2016 Author Posted August 16, 2016 Just filled the blue channel with black Glad it worked! Weird, I tried that and it just didn't wanna work. Must have been doing something else wrong in the process, I dunno. I'll mess around with that channel then, I'm assuming making that lighter will increase the shine Definitely keeping a backup just in case with this one Thanks again pal Quote

If you make the blue channel lighter, the rbg channel will turn blue! So I guess this will increase the shine! 1 Quote
