Open the alpha channel under the Channels tab in Photoshop. The darker colours will be dull, the lighter colours will be shiny. So any black parts will be dull and any white parts will really shine, while any grey parts will be a bit shiny but not that much.

What I like to do is open another image (the top.dds for example), then go back to the alpha layer of the normals file and hit ctrl+a and then ctrl+c to copy it. Then you can paste it into your other image and edit it there, change greys to blacks if you want them less shiny or similarly whites to greys or blacks, or if you want things more shiny then make them lighter. Then, when you're done, highlight all and copy again and paste it back into the alpha channel.

The tool is good if you just wanna be non-specific and make the whole thing dull or shiny, but for example when I was making Syxx I wanted the cloth to be dull, with the silver outlines to be as shiny as possible and the red text to be pretty shiny but not too much, so just making the entire shader dull wouldn't have been ideal. SO, I opened and greyscaled my top texture and then changed the colours of certain parts (the top to black, the silver text outlines to bright white and the red part of the text to grey) and then copied that into my alpha layer in the normal file.

Also good to use the top texture as a base to convert to a normal map and cut out the logos and stuff that you need to be a little 3D, then paste them into the normal file (after smoothing out any old logos etc. that are no longer there).

It's easy open your "_n.dds" file in photoshop. It should look like this:

29xjkp2.png

you'll see Alpha 1 unselected. Click the box for Alpha 1, and uncheck the RGB box and it'll look like this:

15efnrs.png

Now normally when you create your own normal, it will not look like this. It'll either be completely black or completely white.. To removee shine, just color the whole box black. the lighter the color, the more shine. so just adjust to your liking. It's all trial and error.

@I CAN I WILL Here is what you do if you don't understand what he is saying

Download CrazyBump

Import your texture into it (top.dds after editing)

Import your object into the 3D preview area (if ya want) (i recommend it)

After adjusting , copy and paste normals and the rest (alpha,ao)

Done!

This is not what i do but it is the easy method

Once you start modding advance stuff you will be able to understand @4LifeBrother 's Tutorial

To 4LifeBrother : Great tutorial , you should post it on a separate topic ;);)

On that topic, another tip for OP - don't create your own normals if you can help it! All the good stuff is in the original one - creases, seams and all that. Just open up the normal file that goes with the object and use either the colour picker and brush tool to put plain purple (assuming that's the colour of your main normal layer) over any stuff you don't want anymore (logos etc) or use the clone-brush tool. Then convert your texture to normal map and cut out any new stuff and paste it in the normal image. Then do as I said above/in the PM and convert your texture to greyscale and recolour it (remember, dark = no shine, light = more shine), then copy-paste it into your alpha 1 layer in the normal file.

Might just do that :) With clearer formatting and demonstration images of course ;)

yeaaaaa it's definitely not in that sense. but i guess i assumed he knew. if you're just adding a logo or something not too ridiculous, just create a normal with nvidia tools, overlap that with the in game one, magic wand tool the space outside of your logo and hit delete. that way you don't have to worry about placement issues or it being out of alignment. with logo placement being trial and error, it'll save you a lot of time if you messed up your texture and have to redo everything all over again.

Yeah absolutely, I'm sort of assuming he probably knows as well having seen some of his mods but just in case :) Ahhhh yeah that's what I meant as well, paste in the whole normal-mapped image first and then delete the bits you don't need, probably gonna have to shift it up and down otherwise. I like the magic eraser tool as well, one click and it's gone :D

You mean you're getting the outline of it showing up? If so, you need to edit the normal (top_n.dds) mate ;)

So you're editing the main (purple) layer, then after you save it you're getting the shine again? Are you checking the alpha layer again after you save it? Also make sure you're saving the file as DXT5 interpolated alpha.
