Anyway to remove vertices while keeping the count?

Is there any workaround to remove or make vertices invisble while keeping the count? I am trying to do the Shinsuke Nakamura hair and I am not to fond with Justin Gabriel's hair.

I always move it in.

That's not a really smart idea for me. I have the hair animation activated so while the match is going on it would probably go out of the head and comeback in.
