I know that but the problem is I'm a bit rubbish using the face deformation and such. Do you have any guidelines to using that?

I was too. I uploaded about 5-6 different face photos before I got something that worked and even that wasnt good enough. Your photo cant be too bright or dark, it should face forward, lighting should be even amongst the face, fade the edges. Just make sure you line up all the facial features in photo capture before you choose the skin color.
