Career Mode Rivalries

I've been playing career and it seems that unless I have a rival, I get attacked at the start of every Smackdown by a random superstar, but last time I had a rival and went for a title I could only play one of the two matches, for example i just started going for my first title, when i got to TLC I was #1 Contender but was put in a non title TLC match, and I had to simulate my rival match, can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
