Texture Modding Help

I made two textures already, and I know they are bad. I went through all the tutorials. One question I have is do I just take the textutes and make from pictures or use the brush tool? Sorry if i sound stupid. Is there any tips on how to make the textures look like it was in game like how pH guy and Bannockburn do. Thanks in advance

I use both pictures and brush tool to make a texture, I don't think anybody can help you out because it's not like you follow steps you just need to practice.

Lol, so I'm going to practice on macho man, his attires are a little to complicated though, but I will just keep trying.

I would try something easy at the first time. Here's something that could help you.

These are good stuffs. 

Also what you can do is pulling out parts from other textures so that the result would look close to the default models.
