Medical Marijuana Legislation. (Or "Legal Pot" for the YOLOers

I know this has been talked about before but I'm not too sure if it has been on here. My state has recently passed a bill in favor of cannabis for medical purposes including HIV/AIDS, glaucoma and Crohn's disease among other health problems. and I'm personally quite excited about it, and not because I'm a pothead.

I'm not going "Woo hoo! Give me pot bro! Gonna change my gamertag to OG KiLLA KuSH 420!" quite the opposite, but I'll get to that in a bit. Crohn's disease runs in my family, an uncle of mine just died last year due to complications from it actually, and I'm pretty sure next time I go see my doctor she's gonna want me checked for it with the way my stomach has been known to act these past few years. And if I do have it, I'm glad to know that Minnesota is at least giving me the potential option to go a little more natural route as opposed to the drugs that are constantly being advertised on TV. I say that as I drink a can out Mountain Dew, write your own punchline for that.

As well all know, cancer is a huge problem and a lot of patients complain the the chemo and other processes surrounding it are more painful than the cancer itself. I'm not gonna say I know the ins and outs of treatment or 100% understand the effects of marijuana on the cancer cells, because I really don't. But I do know that an overwhelming amount of cancer patients who have had marijuana available have sung it's praises. A good friend of mine's mother recently beat cancer and while we were talking she was telling me that on more than one occasion after leaving her mom's she'd get ahold of who her (then) boyfriend got his pot from and run her a little bit when she was really hurting and after a little convincing, her mom gave it a try and it helped her pain immensely. Hell, I have a messed up back and I knew a few times I opted to ask my neighbor for a little bit in lieu of swallowing more painkillers and muscle relaxers and it was just as, if not more effective.

The problem with legalizing medical marijuana is making sure that the people who need it are the ones who are getting it. The problem is that the "medical" part has been bastardized by the idiots going "Oh man! I have chronic headaches. I need something for it." That's when you take some aspirin, Excedrin or down some caffeine. I'm not gonna go see Doc for pot because my spine and back muscles are all mess up, unless you have a tumor causing your headaches you don't need to either. Now people who have cancer, HIV/AIDS and other (potentially) life threatening medical issues? If them and their doctor agree that it will help them with fewer side effects, smoke away. It's something that should be between the patient and their doctor(s), the government should dictate what people can and can't do or take to ease the pain or even cure what is potentially killing them.

What's your view on the subject? Legalize it for medical reasons but not for recreational use? Total legalization? Or do you not think it's needed period?

It should be used only for medical reasons. As for full legalization , it wouldn't help things at all.

I hate weed. I'm in no way against drugs, in fact quite the opposite, but weed is bad news in my eyes. I've seen it really mess with a lot of people in terms of them getting lazier and lazier and less productive after prolonged use. A lot of my friends basically just have nothing going for them now after smoking it for years. I pretty much never touch the stuff, unless i'm at a festival or something big like that and it's free.

It can have medical benefits, but then so can MDMA if administered properly. The idea of it being legalised fully to me is just like signing a death sentence to a lot of people who'll just become burdens to society. Maybe a little hyperbolic, but you catch my drift. For medical use, yes I think it's acceptable, but how exactly that is managed and distributed would need real scrutiny.

I feel that it should only be legalized for use by terminally ill patients and nothing else. They are going to die anyway so we might as well make it less painful for them. I've seen weed destroy the lives of countless people because they become obsessed with it and they put it first over more important things like going to work and paying bills. I used to be fully for it before I started seeing it effect people around me. Physically it may not hurt you much but, mentally it seems to fuck with people's priorities.

I used to live with somebody who was obsessed with the really strong marijuana, and practically the only words that came out of his mouth were "dude" and "bro". A very strong reason why I am straight edge.

People say it's harmless but I guess it depends on the person. I have a friend who started on cigarettes and then moved onto weed. Not to long after he openly started sniffing cocaine in front of me. It's definitely a gateway drug. You will try anything to achieve that high again.

Got a source for that?

Pure weed is as harmless as an apple, according to some scientists, so you have to look into what you see.

Glad I was eating while looking at that picture, thanks for that...

So it seems no one here thinks it should be legalized for recreational use, correct?

make it legal, tax the shit out of it, anyone that wants to smoke it then helps the economy instead of some drug pushing scumbag. maybe even reduce the tax on a few other things or pump much more money into the NHS (uk ftw :p)

any government that does this though will not get re-elected the next term because people wont look at the bigger picture.

...thunder stealer. Yes, if it's made legal for recreational use it should be taxed and regulated like tobacco and alcohol are.

I dont support it nor am I a user or a scientist. All I know is what I see and hear from people who use it, and from what I've seen, it has no redeemable qualities that would make me want to support it for leisure use.
