Lag during online matches?

I've just got a new cable connection at home which offers me a 50-120 mbps connection, before this my connection was barely making 2 mbps (which made it near impossible to do anything online).

Earlier this afternoon, I did an online match to see how well the connection would do, as I'd like to do more online matches this year than I have previously. The only issue is, the ping still sucks.  I was in a Special Referee One Vs One Divas match, the SR was a CAW so I don't know if that had any effect but anyway, the lag.  I noticed it right away which sucked cause was at a disadvantage for the entire match (though I ended up winning).  but the lag still was annoying, to put it into perspective. I could press the control stick to move myself one step and the ping would be about 2/3 seconds delayed.

I'm just curious, is there anyway to improve this such as settings for a match etc?  If not, I may just give up on online matches for this year again.

Thanks to any who can offer any suggestions

Well the only CAW being used was the person who created the match, myself and my opponent where both in game Divas.

I'll have another match sometime over the weekend and try one without any CAW allowance and see if that helps.
