WWE game with or without theme?

Hey, I was just wondering what you guys thought about "30 years of WrestleMania" and "Attitude Era" for WWE13 and WWE2K14. Would you prefer just the normal roster or do you think these themes for the games make it better?

I like the idea of both themes and having the ability to have a superstar from one generation face a superstar from another. It makes for really interesting and creative gameplay. Just the other day I had an epic match between Retro Rock and Randy Orton for the Brahma Bull Championship.

Whilst I love having these themes for the excitement of gameplay we wouldn't normally have, I would love to have a full current roster in a game. I think 2K could give us all the superstars and divas on the current roster and instead of just any random legends they could give us legends that could come back for certain storylines like Mick Foley, The Rock, Piper, Kevin Nash and so on.

I am kind of torn between wanting a theme and not wanting a theme (wishing there was some way we could have both). I do feel that the themes take focus off the current roster but the themes are so cool that I wouldn't be rejecting them either.

Basically... what do you guys think?

I  agree 100% with you. I think it could be possible to have all of the Era's of WWE with ECW and WCW on next gen.

No theme. Focus on current roster.

I'm glad you agree but you bring to my attention something else. Is WCW/ECW next? I wouldn't be a big fan of this. Whilst I enjoyed the invasion and stuff when it was happening I would completely and 100% prefer the current roster in all rather than the roster that would be given for that period. I would love the Dudley's, The Hardy's and Kurt Angle on my roster but that's doubtful anyway so really if that was next I'd prefer no theme if it meant taking focus off the current roster.

This does seem like the best option and the fact that we have two games with great rosters means we can always go back and play them if we miss it. Would you like current legends also rather than legends that would never step foot inside a WWE arena again? or no legends at all? There's got to be legends right? What I mean is ex WWE superstars that may actually return someday like they're not to old or whatever. RVD would have been a perfect example but I guess I'll go with Batista, Nash, Austin, Mick Foley as examples.

Games are almost exclusively sold on a great marketing campaign and selling point.  WWE has a lot of past eras and/or selling points to take advantage of to continue selling their games.  I didn't think it would be possible to do something to top Attitude Era Mode from WWE '13, but having 30 Years of WrestleMania for this year was absolutely brilliant and something I didn't expect.  If there is any one themed game that is left untapped, it would be the total WWF vs. WCW Monday night war themed game.  There is so much history, footage, and depth there that can be tapped into that 2K sports could release a separate game just focusing on the Monday Night Wars.  It could encompass WWF, the birth of WCW and its rise, and also show ECW all with crossover storylines in different points that real life storylines crossed.  Like the 1997 ECW invasion of WWF.  Or DX trying to invade WCW.  Or the WCW/ECW "alliance" storyline that WWE ran once they bought out WCW.  But to do this, I'd like to see 2K release a separate title and take more than one year to complete it.  Maybe two or three years to do that game justice with every roster member, storyline, and any other detail that can be focused on.  Just my idea but I doubt it'll ever be done primarily because WWE only does self-promotion and not anything outside of its own image.  They'd probably only consider this idea if video game sales were down and they needed a boost.  Just remember though, you saw it here first :D

Eh i'm the opposite i liked when Chris Jericho kept winning titles instead of putting people over :/ But that's just my opinion.

as someone who doesnt follow wrestling very much any more, its the Theme that sells it to me, im stoked about 30YoWM and wouldnt buy it if it was just the current roster. i miss all the proper gimmicks etc that we used to have,

this. couldnt say more. and tbh a game with only current roster wont sell as a game with a theme.

Valid point. I like you're response because you're not torn between the two like me. I love all the wrestlers on the roster that are only there because of the 30 years of WrestleMania mode. I would like a solid current roster too though. Since it is yet to be announced though I'm still hoping they deliver. With D Young being on there I do feel a lot better about what's to come

Have to agree with this, I buy the game based on the legends in it, so the Attitude era theme was a nice steer in the right direction :)

No, what I meant was that 2k sports don't waste time on the past and focus using all the roster space on the current roster instead of being lazy and copying and pasting superstars and putting retro at the end. Make an nxt mode.

less people are interested in NXT though, and considering 2k themselves admit that WWE games target a fairly small, niche market, they have to do everything to maximize sales , WWE Legends boost more sales than NXT ever will and the game will never bee mainstream enough.

Don't get me wrong, I dig your point, i love that you're interested in current wrestling and the future of it, as without people like you, the whole WWE universe, not just the games, would fall to nothing and then we'd have no new games etc... but its just not economically viable to do it your way!

best option is a MASSIVE game, with BOTH features... and to be fair, with 2k sports thats looking more and more possible!

Thanks for the reply, but if you watch this video you will see what I mean.

I agree... Best option is to have a MASSIVE game with as many crammed into it as possible. It looks like a lot of divas have made it in this year so current roster may be amazing!

I like having current rosters in the game, but let's face it: WWE is so stale and boring these days that you have to use other eras & legends to sell the game itself.  How many people would pre-order based on a current WWE Superstar?  Not many I am guessing.  Plus WWE's main roster is very thin and there is not much variety in it.  Adding these "WWE Legends" into the game adds moves, entrances, and other extras that go along with them that simply make the game better than it would have been without them.

I'm just glad it seems 2k are focusing on the current roster along with the legends from 30 years of wrestlemania

I went into the 2K/WWE game deal kind of skeptical about how they would execute their first game and whether it would be any good.  I have been pleasantly surprised about the quality and attention to details, especially adding 30 Years of WrestleMania.  This combines older Manias with newer ones and any fan can enjoy & appreciate the historical value there.  I cannot wait to see what 2K sports can do to top this in WWE2K15 and I'm sure they'll do something even more impressive!

They have to have a theme. The hardcore, devoted folks will buy the game no matter what. But what about everyone else? There has to be something there. As much as I'd like 2 see something completely current, with NXT focused on as well-- I doubt it will happen anytime soon. I'm sure they will drum up a few more era theme deals. I would LOVE to see The Monday Night Wars and Ruthless Aggression, but the roster would be difficult to complete. But who knows, with 2K at the helm, we may see some surprises!

Another thing I'd like to see focused on in upcoming games from 2K is legend tag teams included.  Not just singles legends, but all of the past tag teams including LOD, 4 Horsemen, NWO, Dudley Boys, Hardyz, and even Edge & Christian.  I want to see enough tag teams to make a complete division.  I also would like to see exclusions like Kurt Angle from the Attitude Era included because their absences are big omissions.  Just seeing how great 2K does with their NBA teams with legends from different eras gives me hope for the upcoming WWE titles.

The game has to have a theme, because if it didn't we would just have a bunch of games with slightly updated rosters & features (see SvR 09-11)

I think they should focus on the main roster first and fit in the bigger stars of the older generations, and the others who are necessary for the game mode. They found a good balance this year because we have big stars from all generations, and we have them in their peaks, not just in one part of their career.

Think of it this way. What about a season mode. Let 2k sports focus on the current roster to enable you to have a larger selection of people to pick from. Like smackdown HCTP or SYM
