I want to create custom renders. Where should I start?

I want to start creating renders for WWE '13. I have Adobe Photoshop experience I just need to know what effects you recommend and what the requirement are for it to work in-game. For example, I need to know file size. I know it needs to be .DDS. What else do I need to know?
