Thom Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 I made a post about this a few weeks ago in the Gaming Forum and said I'd post the results, so here you go: First piece of music I've ever made, and I'm pretty happy with the way it's turned out. Definitely exceeded the criteria for 70%+ marks, so I'll be disappointed if I don't get a First for this module. Basically we had to write a short piece of music to accompany a scene from a film, footage from a video game, or a passage from a book, and then create it in Cubase using MIDI. Quote
Jonny Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 The rhythm section is ok, but I'm not sure about your choice of bass line and synth. The synth used is pretty thin, but then again, it is midi sounds. There's some pretty good tutorials on the interwebs for getting the most out of midi sounds. You should check it out. Good luck with the results. Quote
Thom Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 Yeah we had limited MIDI instruments (Roland XV50-50 module) and a few VSTs which weren't particularly great. We haven't touched on how to manipulate VST settings to get the type of sounds that we want, so it was mostly trial and error. Do you know of any specific sites with tutorials on how to improve MIDI sounds like you mentioned? Oh and if you've got a pair of headphones nearby it's worth listening through them, some of the drum sounds are practically inaudible through laptop speakers due to the sub-bass, and there's some satisfying panning in parts. Jonny Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 One sure place to get info is Tranceaddict.com. Their forum members are very helpful. Another helpful site is KVRaudio.com. Here's a quick search for midi based tutorials, KVRaudio I was wearing headphones when listening to your track. Although, my audio inputs on my motherboard are acting up, so I can only listen in mono sound. I hope you find what you're looking for on those sites. Quote
