phil Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 It's official: Christopher Nolan is taking control of a new Superman movie franchise. Back in February, we heard rumours that The Dark Knight director would "godfather" a rebooted Man of Steel series, and now Nolan has confirmed the news in an interview with The Los Angeles Times. "It's very exciting, we have a fantastic story," he said. "We feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right." Nolan is keeping his cards close to his chest on specifics about the plot or who would direct the film, but he did say that Batman collaborator David Goyer was working on the screenplay, and that the idea for Superman came when the pair was struggling on Batman 3. "He basically told me, 'I have this thought about how you would approach Superman. I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I've never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma [Thomas -- his wife and co-producer] and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way." He wouldn't go into specifics, but it seems the pair will approach the story in the same way they did Batman. "A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that's what I know how to do... We're [...] trying to find an incredible story in a way that audiences can engage with it the way they engage with contemporary action films. I think David's approach is a very good way of doing just that." Finally, it seems we shouldn't expect Superman and Batman to team up anytime soon. "Each serves to the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other." Source: IGN (http://movies.ign.com/articles/107/1076244p1.html) Quote
Aero Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 not too keen on superman, but spiderman was shit so mayb a batman style makeover will be a good thing... who honestly wanted to see peter parker fail at looking cool when he had sybiote "black spidey" powers... and a fucking DANCE scene!?!?! Quote
Smacktalks Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 @Dave: I quite liked the first Spiderman the first time I seen it, but I never really was too interested in the rest of them. A Dark Knight style'd Spiderman is the best thing that could happen to that series. As for the Superman news it's something to look forward too, the previous attempt in Superman Returns was probably the worst superhero film i've ever seen, so a Nolan reboot is already a winner imo. jitz Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 The new Spiderman movie is more "Ultimate Spiderman" (comic series), sending him back to high school, not a Batman style reboot at all... Quote
Smacktalks Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Yeah I know, I was just saying that I would prefer a Dark Knight style remake. Quote
jitz Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 It doesn't really lend itself to the character. Spiderman makes jokes, Batman doesn't. Spiderman swings around New York in the daytime in red and blue tights, Batman drives around Gotham City at night in black. They're apples and oranges. Quote
Aero Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 fair point lol. superman is too powerful to be a credible super hero in my opinion, he can do too much and is basicly set up as the perfect guy and as such is only a girls super hero, which is silly because i dont know too many ppl who have a TV in their oven! jitz Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Superman is a relic from a superhero age gone by where heroes were heroes and didn't have a care in the world, they woke up, fought the bad guys, and then went home. Creators have been having a hard time for the past two decades trying to reinvent what Superman is, and try to make him relevant in an age where heroes juggle saving the world with everday life, where they have emotional issues and hang ups. You're right, he is too powerful, I think the most obvious answer is to strip him of most of that power. Take away his flight, nobody flies these days, take away the heat vision and every other vision he has. His super breath and shit. Take it all, and leave him with something that he can work with. Hopefully that's the plan... Quote
Aero Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 so basicly, you agree with me, atleast to an extent? mark the date in your calenders folks lol. yep, definately, superman basicly had a way to counter anything a villan threw at him and thats balls, most if not all other superhero movies always have a make or break point for the hero where he might fail and with all his powers, you cant really do that other than throw a green rock at him! jitz Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 If you didn't say so many stupid things I'd agree with you more often. Superman is a completely unrelatable character, and in this day and age people like to think "Hey, he's just like me" or "Hey, I could be like that". It's a bit strange of people wanting to relate to superheroes, but I'm sure a psychologist could tell you exactly why that is. No doubt dreams of grandeur or something. Superman though is an alien, that was orphaned, and is only vulnerable to kryptonite. Now that's targetting a minority there, I'm not an alien, the majority of people in the world aren't orphans and those that are didn't have their parents killed fleeing an alien world, and kryptonite does not exist. Star Wars is set in space with a hundred different species, but the main characters are human. Star Trek is the same, but explores a little more the human relationship with aliens. Superman, the Fortress of Solitude, Krypton, it's just all aged so poorly. It's like playing a PSone game today. You remember the glory it once had, the fond memories; but it's hidden behind such an ugly facade and fiddly controls, it's just not the same as it once was. Quote
