Smacktalks Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 The BBC has announced that 21-year-old Scottish actress Karen Gillan will take the role of Doctor Who's newest full-time assistant when Matt Smith steps into the Time Lord's shoes for the show's fifth season in 2010. It's not Gillan's first encounter with the Time Lord, having already appeared in season four's The Fires of Pompeii as a soothsayer. Previous TV work includes roles in Channel 4's The Kevin Bishop Show. David Tennant completes his tenure as the 10th Doctor in the last of four TV specials expected to air early in 2010. With 26-year-old Matt Smith stepping up as the 11th Doctor, Gillan takes the combined age of next season's TARDIS team to a whopping 47. Thoughts? Quote
jitz Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 A ranga? Really? I actually vaguely remember her from the Pompeii episode; I don't care enough to actually go back and re-watch that awful episode though. It all comes down to choosing Matt Smith as the Doctor. He's young; you can't pair a young male up with someone older than him to start off with. You have to start with a safe dynamic, and maybe later on down the track change that to pair him with someone older and try to get some comedy and exploration out of that situation. I don't think they can actually fuck it up; I trust them. I can't think of a bad casting choice in the past 4 seasons of the show. Everytime people threw their arms up in horror at casting choices (Billie Piper and David Tennant come to mind), it turned out they were the best choices. The only downfalls in the series since it's come back have been a few terribly written episodes. As I've said before, with Russell T davies gone, that's half the bad episodes of the past two seasons accounted for. Stephen Moffat was writing the best Doctor Who stories told since the early 80's, and was given the top job. So he knows what he's doing. Also, for a ranga she looks kinda cute. That will probably go away when she starts talking with a thick Scottish drawl though. Quote
Smacktalks Posted June 1, 2009 Author Posted June 1, 2009 Totally agreed with the Moffat comments, his writing has produced by far the best episodes. I was one of the ones that hated the thought of Catherine Tate as the last assistant, but it turned out to be a great casting choice. I'm just hoping it all comes together again this time. As for the new assistant, I can't remember her in her last episode, was it the one with the clockwork robots? The accent could be off putting, I just hope it's not a really strong accent. Quote
Aero Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 was it not the episode with the "invisible" scorpion things which fucked with reality! i hated catherine tate as an assistant, eeugh, that face, her voice etc. it never really ruined any episodes, they used her well in it, i just have a great dislike for her, she did pull off acting as the doctor very well tho... but thank fuck for the "after effects" resulting in her mind having to be wiped aside from that, all great choices so far... one thing that does annoy me tho is this constant need to pick people that have been in previous episodes, martha, this girl, and then all the constant rumours of who else is gonna play who and half of them have been in an episode before, its weird... its hardly a huge deal, but its definately a mild annoyance!
