What any religion has in common is the fact that it is a choice. However, as soon as you make that choice you are obliged to shun the non-believers, or even kill, rape, blowup or nail them to a cross...

That is why I think religion is retarded. It's ok to believe but believe for yourself and dont make other people share yours.

I think you'll find I was the one saying Christianity in the Middle Ages was retarded. I said that in retort to Phil backing up CJ's argument that ALL Catholics go ape shit when you ask question, by talking about the Spanish Inquisition. That argument is a middle ages argument, doesn't exist now, and therefore is silly to use. Religion should be what it is has become now in the Church; tolerant of all other faiths, and to work with them.

Religion shouldn't change with time, as it loses what it stands for, but the persecution of other religions was a change that shouldn't have happened in the Middle Ages, as it drifted from what the doctrine stated in the first place.

What I was trying to say was I still think any religion is retarded. Even though it managed to bring some decency to humankind, it has always been reason for trouble. Wars, persecution and hatred all derive from religion. Either used to camouflage the fact that the conqueror is actually after wealth and power. Or with such crazy fanatism that rationalising is imposible.

I think religion has brought more bad stuff then good stuff over the last 2000 years, to say anything good about it.

The problem with religion is that it is interpreted by idiots.

If you look at most religions, look at the 10 commandments for instance, or even the parables of the Bibles, they are good teachings for how people should live their lives, and instill moral values. I agree that the people who believe the things that are in the bible are factual are a couple of sandwiches short of a picnic, but the teachings are invaluable in my opinion.

It is when you get people like Richard I or Saladin or Henry VIII etc etc. who interpret religion and see themselves as the ultimate religious voice undergod that religion culminates into wars and mass murder. If people just stuck to religious teachings and morals, the world would be a better place, but they don't because there are idiots around the world who think they are fighting for the chair to God's right.

Not really stated as much as the Pope, considering there are enarly as many Muslims in the world as there as Catholics.

Anyway; the religion of not only Catholicism, but also Islam and Judaism, states and promotes moral sexual abstinence. Once again, you are asking for a religion (only Catholicism I might add) to change it's views, when the fact of the matter is people with AIDs should stop having sex.

I don't see a problem with condoms at all personally and it would slow the spread of AIDs to an extent, but you are asking a 2000 year old religion to change because of a sexually transmitted disease.

If non religious people can't be bothered to wear condoms (see CJ's friend thread), what chance does the whole African continent have?

Condoms won't solve the AIDs crisis. Pope John Paul II was correct in saying that a moralistic attitude to sex will stop it.

i've seen plenty of people on tv taking stances against religion. however, the likes of george carlin, bill maher and fuck, even mr atheism himself, richard dawkins NEVER take aim at the religious - just the religions. they don't call the people "fucking idiots" rather, they simply point out the flaws in religion and why they believe it's wrong. while they might share your opinions, jitz, they have different intentions. they seek to inform, you seek to berate and belittle. there's a huge difference.

so yeah. go ahead and post videos or whatever it is you said you would do. find me one tv clip where religious people are referred to as "fucking idiots." and make sure the comment isn't directed at a particular group or person. for example, if someone says those folks at the westboro baptist church are fucking nuts, that's only in reference to like 10 out a few billion people. try to avert from scientology as well. nobody likes scientologists.

and for the record: i CAN say that all religious people are fucked and that i want to murder them all. that statement alone poses no threat to anybody nor does it infringe on anyone's rights, therefore, im protected by the 1st amendment of the us constitution (free speech, baby!). now if i actually went around telling people that im going to kill them, that might get me in some trouble.
