jitz Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 From 1788 till 1840 is was under New South Wales rule, 32 years AFTER explorers had identified it a seperate land mass and come up with the term Australasia. If New Zealand settlers celebrated Australia Day from 1808 till 1840 due to their connection to NSW, I won't hold it against them. It still doesn't mean the two countries were collectively known as Australia. France, North America and Britain and many others have all claimed sovereignty over other close-by islands in the past that have retained their name, not taking on the name of the ruler. In the Wikipedia, nowhere does it state that New Zealand has any former names - like it does for every other country that has had one. Quote
