CanaMatt Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 And do you know what it was?? an old guitar pick I have been volunteering with low income children lately, and today we took them to a corn maze. These kids were all ages 6-8 so they were a bit of a handful, but there was about 6 "leaders" and 14 kids, so it wasn't too much to deal with. ANYWAY, there was this little guy there named Blane, who kept leaving the group, so I had to go and talk to him a few times about making sure he stays with the group so he doesn't get lost. After a while, he wouldn't leave my side, walking beside me talking about how his favorite thing he ever got is a used ipod that he puts linkin park on mostly. Anyway, he was lagging a bit, so him and i were walking at the very back of the group, when he screams "WAIT!" and freezes. I tell him we have to hurry up and catch up to the group to make sure we don't lose them. But he won;t budge, and says he sees something deep in the corn. I tried to convince him to forget about it, but he would have nothing of it. So he goes crawling through the corn. It takes him about 10 minutes of digging, and crawling, and he emerges with a green guitar pick. He was so fucking proud of it you don't even realize. He was walking around grinning and showing everybody. Then on the bus ride home he saved me a seat at the back of our bus, so i sit beside him, and he's just talking, and talking, and talking the whole way home(and he's supposedly a very shy kid, who acts out ALOT). Anyway, we finally get back to the center, and he tells me he hopes I come again sometime, and gets in his mom's old van. A while passes, and I'm in the center with the rest of the leaders (the two program coordinators whom i am friends with, their "youth staff", and a psychology student there for practicum) and reach in my pocket for my cell phone. I also pull out the little green guitar pick. The little bugger put it in my pocket on the bus ride home. I almost wanted to cry. Honestly, this sounds like such a whiny pansy ass story, but it has put me in the best mood I can remember being in in a long long time. Quote
Aero Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 i feared it was heading towards some sort of sick child porn story... so cheers for avoiding that, thats kinda gay man, but pretty cool Quote
Twist of Fate Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 That's cool Matt. If the small child was slick enough to put the pick in your pocket without you noticing, perhaps he was slick enough to take your wallet too? It's alright, go ahead and check, we'll wait on you...hopefully you still have it lol. btw..was it the short bus per chance? Quote
The Don Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 Funny how the little things like that mean more than a CD you really wanted or something... Out of curiosity Matt, is it a Big Brother kinda thing you're doing or court ordered? Quote
Aero Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 what kinda court orders you to play with kids don? the wrong kind! Quote
CanaMatt Posted October 9, 2008 Author Posted October 9, 2008 Its not court ordered at all, and is kind of like a big brother program in a way, but not really. I have a couple friends that work for a company called "heritage family services" and their jobs are coordinating youth activities so that kids in shitty towns, and form low income families have like some wholesome, positive activities in their life. I've just been volunteering to help them because they're always short on male help. Quote
The Don Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 Sounds like you're doing a good thing Matt, not to mention you're having a positive impact on someone's life. My friend got a Big Sister when she was 13 and it played a huge role in her life, we were just talking about it the other night and some of her happiest memories are ones that involved her Big Sister, no doubt in a few years the kid will look back on the maze and smile. Kudos Matthew, kudos. Quote
System of a Daan Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Seems like he really likes you, touching indeed. Quote
