Smacktalks Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 From IGN: Fox Searchlight picks up Aronofsky's latest. by Brian Linder US, September 9, 2008 - Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, currently having praise showered on it after a North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, has been picked up by Fox Searchlight Pictures for U.S. distribution. "Darren Aronofsky has created an unbelievably electrifying and compelling tale with tour de force performances," said Fox Searchlight Pictures President Peter Rice. "We are delighted to be releasing this brilliantly executed film." "I've known Peter Rice for many, many years and am excited and honored to finally get a chance to collaborate with him and his team," Aronofsky added. The Micky Rourke film won the Golden Lion at the 2008 Venice Film Festival. It centers on Randy "The Ram" Robinson, who was a professional wrestling sensation back in the 1980s, but now struggles to earn a living by putting on small performances in school gyms and community centers around New Jersey. Robinson is estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and is unable to sustain any legitimate relationship. He lives for the thrill of the show. But a heart attack forces Robinson to retire, and he begins to reevaluate his life. He tries to reconnect with his daughter, and strikes up a romance with an aging stripper (Marisa Tomei). But all of this can't compare to Robinson's passion for his profession. The Wrestler is set for big-screen release in December. Quote
