Subrick Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 They're influenced by emo. My Heart is their most emo song. Quote
Fozy Posted July 17, 2008 Author Posted July 17, 2008 Yeah, what's the beef with electronic music? It's good. Thom's right about MCR, they are incredible live. Quote
Subrick Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 He misinterpreted what I said. I was gonna say "computer" but then I thougt someone would argue with me about Garageband or something like that. What I meant was is that I don't like rap because it's not organic. I consider keyboards and synths and stuff like organic because they're inspired by pianos. Turntables are things that I kinda like, yet I'm still having trouble really liking them. And while I'm not the biggest fan of it, electronic music is pretty good in its own right. Radiohead in particular. Quote
Thom Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Actual rap is actually music in it's most organic form; spoken word. You're being real ignorant by judging entire genres based upon their mainstream flagship artists. And a synthesizer is nothing like a piano other than in the respect that it has white and black keys. Turntables are pieces of equipment used for playing pre-recorded material on. The fact that people have been able to manipulate them into actual instruments is mind-blowing, if you look for Youtube videos of people like Prime Cuts and DJ A-Trak, then the inventiveness of what they do, and the insane skill that's required of them to operate the mixers while controlling the vinyl on the platter makes it pretty hard to say that they aren't musicians just because they aren't plucking a string. Quote
bigpoppn Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Oh Thom, don't shatter Rick's dreams by saying Fiddy Cent isn't an actual rappah. Quote
jitz Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Hmm Thom, I still wouldn't call someone altering someone's else's song a musician, no matter what skill they display. There had to be another word for it, "musician" isn't it though. Quote
Thom Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Sure it is, they're using the original material as their instrument. That's like claiming a concert cellist isn't a musician because they didn't make the strings of their cello themselves. Quote
Subrick Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Hmm Thom, I still wouldn't call someone altering someone's else's song a musician, no matter what skill they display. There had to be another word for it, "musician" isn't it though. That is the main reason I hate rap and pop, the people don't write their own songs. They outsource to their producers or "professional song writers". And the people who perform them are making millions of dollars off of other people's thoughts and ideas. It's really stupid and disgusting. The only exception I have for this is musicals on Broadway, West End, or movie musicals. They get the writers there because the people in the actual play/movie couldn't write them. Rap and pop, on the other hand, is a completely different story; they are people who perform songs that they didn't write themselves. I mean, did the whole singer/songwriter thing never happen? Quote
Thom Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Do you hate models because they don't make their own clothes? How about actors because they don't improvise their movies? Your flawed argument isn't even relevant, as you're still not looking past mainstream artists before forming your judgement. I wouldn't declare Black Dahlia Murder to be a bunch of over-produced sounding pussies just because I heard an Elliot Minor song on the radio, and they use the same instruments. Quote
Aero Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 yes, every rapper and pop star sings other ppls songs... bravo with that one. you do know that not every rock band write their own song, hell aerosmith didnt write dont wanna miss a thing for a start. Quote
Trips Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I think the arguement is flawed in that well...many rappers and pop stars do sing their own songs. Quote
Joe =/ Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 And the people who perform them are making millions of dollars off of other people's thoughts and ideas. Yeah, it's not like the people who gave their 'thoughts and ideas' are making money by having other people perform their shit for them because they aren't talented enough, is it ? Trips, every argument Subrick has ever had has been flawed. He has no fucking clue what he is talking about. Quote
anothercrapname Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 I'd need a time machine to see most of the artists I'd love to see live thanks to deaths, splits and shit current form, but failing that I suppose there's a fair few I still really want to see. I should be seeing Kings Of Leon next month, so that'll be one crossed off. Other than them I really want to see The Raconteurs, LCD Soundsystem, Jarvis Cocker, David Bowie, System Of A Down and TV On The Radio. I'd love to see The White Stripes, Against Me!, The Futureheads, Dogs Die in Hot Cars and Shy Child again; all were awesome when I've seen them before. And Subrick, WTF? I don't actually give a damn how music is produced, if it sounds good I'll enjoy it, surely that's what matters in the end. Quote
Thom Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Ah yeah, I loved The White Stripes Live. Not least because Meg was wearing a tight white top while drumming. Quote
Big Bizang Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 If you can call what she does 'drumming'. Oh and one thing guys I'm really sorry to have to do this but its' 'I have seen' or 'I saw' not 'I seen' it makes you sound like fucking retards. I don't really have much desire to see huge bands anymore. The state of popular music right now is so appalling it's forcing me deeper and deeper into unknown acts or acts just on the verge of getting somewhere despite being round for years you know the types. I saw Rilo Kiley with my girlfriend and they were incredible. Really low key affair and it doesn't hurt that Jenny Lewis is super hot. Under the Blacklight was amazing live, one of those goosebumps moments as you said Thom. I've seen Frank Turner 4 times and met up with him afterwards at every gig. The man keeps going from strength to strength. I urge you all to look him up, his lyrics are some of the finest, most honest lyrics I have ever heard. Quote
Aero Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 i said "i've seen" surely thats another viable obtion mr. bizang sir? i thought i was done with school :'( Quote
