Smacktalks Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080...ng-letters.html Virgin have started issuing letters to customers uploading/downloading torrents to the web, basically you get 3 strikes and then Virgin disconnect you. It doesn't bother me too much as I dont use torrents, limewire, etc. but how exactly are they gonna find out what your uploading? Unless there downloading a torrent from you or your downloading a torrent from them, then they shouldn't be able to get your IP right? and if they do download from you in order to get the IP's of uploaders, then there breaking the law to catch you breaking the law. Ever since Virgin took over Telewest their service has just gotten worse, but it's the only ISP in the uk that doesnt have a download limit. Quote
Chillalex Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 yeah mine lol does that mean I should download all I want? Im cancelling the contract in a few days and I dont think Ill ever go back to Virgin (internets bad, but the tv service is even worse.) Quote
Smacktalks Posted June 7, 2008 Author Posted June 7, 2008 lol, I've always had it. It was great when it was Telewest / Blueyonder, but when Virgin took it over last year they fucked it up trying to cut costs. I ditched Sky TV in January to upgrade to Virgins TV + Broadband deal for the only reason of a free HD box and all channels for less than Sky. Yet once they installed it the only HD channel was BBC HD between 6-12pm. Complete rip off imo, offering an HD service that has one channel and it only broadcasts for 8 hours or so a day. Which ISP you switching to? I got told AOL doesn't limit your downloads, but I had them years ago for dialup and never liked them much. (Connie never did it for me) Quote
Chillalex Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 lmfao. Dno man I'm hoping that once I've got a job I dont use my home PC much at all (because, good christ, I'll sit at a PC long enough during day hours.) So right now I'm thinking one of those dongle things that are like a tenner a month for X amount of use, and probably go back to fuckin freeview for tv. Seriously, what little there is on cable is not worth paying for at all. I only ever watch 1 through 4 (5 if i want to laugh at hitler or fat people) and Film Four to watch films I've already got on DVD. Yeah my parents used to be on blueyonder, it used to be alright, but now virgin are here and its pretty bad. Quote
scoot Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 yea virgin media are getting worse everyday, a LOT of people have been experiencing problems in my area, when questioned about the problems, virgin usually respond with something regarding the mac addresses and how they are upgrading everyone to a faster connection [im going to 10MB]. i haven't yet had any such letter regarding banning, but should i get a letter, ill be moving my ISP probably to either BT or some sort of other ADSL provider. the worst part of it is we use virgin at work. it would mean obtaining all software legally =| in short, virgin have shit on the great service its former owners provided. Jonny Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 I'm with Virgin Media. I've been hearing nothing but bad news about them. I recently got a 20MB broadband upgrade which seems more like 5MB. What are they trying to pull, scaring us into not downloading torrents. I haven't got a letter and don't expect to get one. Quote
Smacktalks Posted June 8, 2008 Author Posted June 8, 2008 The letter thing was only started on Friday and that's only if your caught downloading / uploading. I emailed them last year when they decided to charge customers for calling their tech support, I then got an email back from them 5 months after I sent it. Add in the fact I tried to order Wrestlemania with them this year and the cable box kept saying there was no events available and there tech support just kept telling me to switch the box off and back on was a joke. Although I did download it for free the next day. @Johnny The reason the 20M seems like 5M is because they limit your speed if you download over 2.5GB and also during busy periods in the day. If your downloading at midnight you should get the full speed. Quote
Jonny Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Seeing as I'm a nocturnal surfer, I download alot at night. The problem still remains. I feel ripped off. Quote
scoot Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 so you should. if its upto 20MB D/L limit then you should not get capped after a measly 2.5GB, i mean lets face it, heavy youtube users watching in high quality would soon feel the effects. dam i wish another fiber optic broadband supplier would pop up on the cheap. if i change my ISP that means im limited to the shitty ADSL broadband connections, which further means a change in my router. currently my WRT54G is doing everything and more that i need it to. Subrick Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 It's bullshit like this that makes me happy that I use Netgear. Quote
Aero Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 It's bullshit like this that makes me happy that I use Netgear. wait, what? shut up Quote
Smacktalks Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 What does netgear have to do with it? It's the ISP that limits the connection, not the router. Quote
Subrick Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Oh. I thought netgear was my provider. I'm not knowledgeble in this shit. Quote
Aero Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA when you dont know things, either say nothing, or ask, otherwise you look foolish Quote
