Chillalex Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 (edited) http://www.medicinal-waste.co.uk If anyone is interested. This is just my illustration work, no modelling or game stuff save for a concept painting. I had to sort out a website tonight (night just passed) as I have an exhibition including my work on tomorrow night for a week thereafter. There are four pages from the book I did (The Codeine Chronicles), which I don't seem to be able to publish, as I had hoped. Its a shame as obviously there is another 28 pages to that, that might not be seen. I'll be making prints available soon though... anyone potentially interested? I also have full length (89cm) framed versions of the body illustration and garden scene, which are up at my exhibition tomorrow, I'll try get pics of that on the night. erm thats about it. Cheers youtube, for killing my animation with your shit compression. Pass the word round if you see fit, but first and foremost just let me know what you think of everything! ALL STAR Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 (edited) Wow this is some reall awesome stuff, love the style you have. The animation looks sweet to. Ive seen some good stuff at uni but your stuff is way better than anything ive seen. For your concept art what drawings and colouring techniques did you use? Edited May 29, 2008 by ALL STAR Quote
Chillalex Posted May 30, 2008 Author Posted May 30, 2008 Apologies first off if Lightbox wasnt working correctly. I've made some .css changes (first thing I've done this morning pretty much soon as I got up) and it should run fine. I'd tried on firefox but not on IE. As for the concept thing, (I think i might remove this soon) but basically I blocked the scene out in 3D, really rough, and did a render (with ambient occlusion.) Then just opened in photoshop and started painting with the brush using a few custom brushes (just using a traditional media overlay). The best tip I can give (I'm finding digital painting hard as fuck to get in to, too.) is to build up a stock pile of textural photos (www.cgtextures.com, R.I.P mayang.com) and once you've roughly painted in areas, add in texture and materials through photographs. Make sure theyre open source mind. Some people will say this is cheating, but to me, as long as it reads fine as a guideline on what to make... whats the problem? Obviously though I'm aiming for games - a time-based industry - so I'm after quicker results with that than someone who had more time would. Quote
Smacktalks Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Really great work Alex, especially the video. That was the first time i'd seen any of your animations and it was really well done. The sound of Eve's voice doing the voiceover fitted in perfectly, any plans to upload a full quality .flv version? Quote
Chillalex Posted May 31, 2008 Author Posted May 31, 2008 Cheers I wouldnt know where or how to upload a full quality flv version. If I get the time to upload it I would, I'm just at a loss as to where. I haven't done any more animations apart from the tealeaf trials and I'm reluctant to ever do any again. It wasn't the animating I didnt like, just the sitting around for hours waiting for it to render. The voiceover was a last minute type thing that actually worked out well. Last nights show went alright, not enough industry people which is a shame (people in charge of inviting them... well, didnt.) but we'll see how it goes. I'm somehow part of a press release for the uni though, so I might be in some papers (cringe.) Quote
bigpoppn Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Dude.....That's awesome! Looked at a few pictures and I was stunned for a minute there. Keep it up Alex! Quote
samountain Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 (edited) Alex your shit is amazing man. Seriously. I'm going to spread the word. I really hope you get picked up. What happened for that interview you had with rare or something? I swear I remember reading that. Anyway, nice to see you doing something you have passion in though. Yeah, my favourite bit is when she swallows the cup, the animation of the body is just epic. What the hell man. I'm potentially interested in prints. I don't know how to shop online, and my attempts at setting up a paypal failed ages ago. But tell me when you get some prints up and I'll try and figure out a way, possibly pay through one of my friends with paypal. Edited June 1, 2008 by samountain Quote
Fozy Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 I've been waiting to buy prints off you for a while now. HIT ME UP. Quote
Nemo Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 fucking amazing shit you got there. definitely interested in prints. also, have you considered any other ways of distributing of the book? pdf maybe? Quote
Chillalex Posted June 1, 2008 Author Posted June 1, 2008 Yeah, remember I mentioned about an ebook on here, and people validly made the point that its not a great medium for illustration books? I have one last idea. As for prints, its great to hear that people are at least interested. I was going to perhaps go with somewhere like Deviantart.com or the likes, but again, costs. I think I might do them myself, so I can ensure quality and a very limited print run to give people more value for money. What I'll do, is, make every book page viewable at a low enough resolution, and if you just contact me about getting a print done of the specific page, then I can get it done. I'll throw up a link and more specifics for that soon as possible. On a side note, I've so far had some pretty good responses. Everyone at the exhibition has so far commented on my work positively, and even my old tutor from 3-4 years ago hit me up to tell me it was great and so on and so forth. I've been chosen for the press release from the uni (did I already mention?) and set up for another interview soon as well. Hopefully my game artist career goes as well as/better than my illustration stuff, mind. : p Thanks everyone for the remarks too, its great to hear I'm doing something right! Quote
Chillalex Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 (edited) Alright, small update About prints, I WILL get round to this but recently somethings come up. Apparently my work was chosen to be exhibited at London's D&AD show (June 24th-all week?) which means I gotta get my stuff together for that. Alot of agents/employers will be there. Feel somewhat out of my depth, as I'm not sure I can go up against the whole country but I'll go and do whatever. It all feels somewhat ironic considering for the past two years I havent even wanted to be an illustrator. [edit: I have just taken down the previous exhibition and I've got some artwork to slang from that though, so Ill post details soon. Just bare with me, I can only fit so many things in to so many hours.] Edited June 13, 2008 by Chillalex Quote
Smacktalks Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Congrats Alex, sounds really promising. Are you showcasing the same stuff from the website? or additonal stuff we haven't seen? Quote
Chillalex Posted June 14, 2008 Author Posted June 14, 2008 cheers bludd Exhibition wise, Im showing my entire book, and the body and grass scene from my site (theyre pretty big prints.) I'm going to do some new illustrations this week to hopefully increase a chance in getting work. Quote
