Niles Jansen The Third Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Alright, so I have a custom computer that seems to only work sometimes, otherwise it starts up and makes a beeping sound, and then just won't start. Besides the point, I'm getting it rebuilt completly and wanted to know what would be the best set up for it. Mostly, I use it for video editing and playing games and shit. So, I'm wondering things like, processor, ram, anything I could stick in there to make it work better for what I need er' to do.. Quote
The Don Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Just to save Scoot from posting... "Buy a mac." Quote
Smacktalks Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 For the beeping sound problem you can check it against this POST Error Code List. http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml As for upgrading it I find it cheaper to buy a new one if it's quite an old PC, 1GB of RAM is a must, Harddrive space you can get away with an 80gb drive if your not constantly downloading movies, etc. Apart from that you'll need a decent gfx card, but that'll probably be the most expensive depending on what kinda games your looking at playing. Niles Jansen The Third Posted February 12, 2008 Author Posted February 12, 2008 Yea, the beep thing is helpful. I'll look into that, find out what's up with it. It only does it sometimes, so I donno- it's just weird. And are the macs really as good as they say? Or is it all just fancy looking? Quote
jitz Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 Are you rebuilding it completely because of the beeping sound? Because that would probably just be a fucked power supply, or a dodgy motherboard. Quote
scoot Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 or wankered RAM or a messed up graphics card, seriously a POST beep can mean so many things its silly, takes MOTS advice and check for what the POST beep means. on the side of a new PC AMD have just launched their quad core CPU range, and to be fair, i prefer AMD CPU's not for the capability of them, more the reliability and price. if your going to be video editing a mac is what i would advise if you can afford it, they do cost a packet, but for what they can do its totally worth it, ad besides if you don't like it, the macs hold the price VERY well, so you could just resell and buy an awesome PC. also, if your thinking of building one yourself, make sure you have plenty of common sense, i have seen the most stupid things happen when people try building for the first time. in short, get a mac Quote
Niles Jansen The Third Posted February 12, 2008 Author Posted February 12, 2008 Are you rebuilding it completely because of the beeping sound? Because that would probably just be a fucked power supply, or a dodgy motherboard. Yeah, I figured it was, but the computer is outdated anyways, so I thought a total reconstruction would be best. Fozy Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Yeah, lets get a mac so i can't use it for anything but music and video editing. YAY. I'm building a new pc. Haven't decided on prcoessor 2GB RAM (2x1GB so i can upgrade if i wanna) 2x8800GT 650GB HDD (2 HDD's) Nvidia motherboard. Quote
Niles Jansen The Third Posted February 13, 2008 Author Posted February 13, 2008 How much is the one your looking into suppose to cost you Iain? Quote
scoot Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 @ iain- the macbook was tested as being the best laptop for running windows on, seriously, even on just 1gb of RAM i can comfortably run OS X and XP at the same time using VMware fusion. besides the fact, a mac can [providing you get the right system] do just about anything a PC can. it can also handle more RAM, being that windows is restricted to its 32x OS at the moment [XP 64x is just not worth the trouble]. and as a tip Iain, dont load windows shitsta on that new machine. the OS would eat the RAM [or at least a good chunk of it]. Fozy Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 i've been using vista a lot recently, i actually now prefer it. lots more things are getting more compatible, there's a lot less crashes and the likes. so i'll be happy with vista. nothing will make me get a mac. Quote
Legendeath Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 (edited) I hate how some people who have macs think it's like having a wife. It's just another OS. And Ubuntu is better imo anyway. Edited February 15, 2008 by Legendeath Quote
Niles Jansen The Third Posted February 15, 2008 Author Posted February 15, 2008 i might buy a mini mac, and keep the pc for everything else i have. that way i can get the best of both worlds, but not really. Quote
Chillalex Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 scoot man I used to bum macs ever since OS9 straight through to OSX but bro they suck get over it true the OS is better for graphics things but so what, compatability wise you cant beat PC hardware and windows, fuck all the tech tests and specs, what it comes down to is reality and you know it. in short macs are good yeah but a pain in the arse. Quote
jitz Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 I haven't used a Mac since...1995, so I can't comment on them beyond a paper airplane game I used to play...and suck at. As for the Vista comment scoot made before, it's no longer applicable people. Compatibility is sky high these days. I have 2gb RAM and run Crysis under Vista on a recommended in game 'Ultra High' setting and it doesn't suffer from any stolen RAM that scoot would have you believe Vista hides under it's bed. If you have a modern computer there's simply no reason not to use it, there used to be sure, but those issues are well over the hill. Quote
scoot Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 i can honestly say i haven't had a hardware compatibility issue yet in OS X. i agree with you on hardware upgrading though, it can be a pain in the arse, trawling around for the right RAM to use etc. but as far as a standard end user goes they seem to be fabulous, less messing around to make people understand them. its also kinda sweet being able to just have XP in a window. macs are good, and can be great, depending on what kind of user you are. also @ Iain, vista is flawed....like really flawed, and i can honestly say when SP1 is released i think it will get worse, there have already been reports of up to 50% decreased speed when file copying. when your copying 30GB of data for a customer per day on average, thats gonna become a pain in the arse. there is a reason Microsoft want to get windows 7 to market sooner rather than later. also i appreciate macs aren't for everybody. but i haven't seen one kernel panic in OS X where im seeing blue screens with vista more or less everyday. and its not a hardware issue, i have checked the motherboard, the CPU, and the RAM independent of each other. and seem to have XP working fine Quote
Fozy Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Vista isn't flawed, your arguement is. Vista works perfectly fine for me, no glitches, no crashes. nothing. looks nicer, and if vista EATS too much of your shitty ram, take off aero. seriously, you're supposed to be the computer wizz around here. Quote
Aero Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 aero? what? why am i being mentioned? hahaha hilarious Quote
