there is a HUGE difference between working in a network store and working in the likes of carphone, i used to work for the link, and trust me, a network store is much better, both in terns of staff conditions AND what they can do for the customer.

i work for orange now, and, to be fair, out of the 5 different stores i've worked in through orange (covering staff, training etc) all of them where actual natives of northern ireland, similar story judging by our link nights out, none of your asian friends to speak of lol.

As an employee of Carphone Warehouse, I feel I should step in.

Nobody who works there WANTS to go up and annoy the fuck out of people by making small talk that neither party is interested in making, but if we don't, we get a bollocking from our prick of an area manager. Anybody who has ever worked in retail will know that area managers are the fucking scum of the earth, they've got 100+ staff under them, and if they don't perform then they don't meet targets, which effects their bonuses. The only thing we can hope for is that the customer we're talking to is smart enough to see through the charade that we're forced to put on, and actually engage in a decent conversation with us.

Apart from that though, the staff are treated surprisingly well. We're given decent rates of commission, there's absolutely brilliant inter-branch relations which makes the whole team feel like a family, we're givn a free night out every few months on the company, we were given TWO nights out at Christmas (One for the area, one for a couple of branches who are friends with each other) both on the company, and we've got the infamaous Carphone ball in April all free of charge, we've got benefits like deck-chair dosh which gives us half of our average commission whenever we have time off so we don't lose out on wages for having time off, we're given a day off for our birthday, mone if we get married/have a kid, long-service rewards after 5 and 10 years, there's all sorts, but I feel like I'm quoting the training course verbatim now.

Anyway to refer to my original point, it's our job, there are things about it that we don't like and customers don't like, but people higher up the chain who never deal with either of these parties think are a great idea. If you think we're bastards, just go to Phones4u, you'll see we're definitely the lesser of the two evils...

agreed, phones4u are scum. network shops dont put that same pressure on you thom but you get similar benifits.

my big problem with the carphone near us was the staff are wankers, they sell you a phone on orange, something goes wrong and they clearly dont even listen to the problem, they get sent up to us and most of the time we either send them back because its a problem with the PHONE not the network and most other cases they could solve the problem if they wanted, but no, they are too concerned with making money. they do the same thing to the o2 shop near us too.
