'Gay' simply means homosexual, so women who love other women are gay. It's sort of a modern slang to use it simply to describe male homosexuality and use lesbian for female homosexuality, but the meaning of the word doesn't include gender. Infact the actual meaning of 'gay' as a sexual term has changes so many times over the past few centuries, in a hundred years it probably won't even mean homosexual at all...again.
