The Don Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 So with the news that Transformers will only be on HD-DVD me and Ladyhawk got into the debate between HD-DVD and Blu Ray. He's convinced the picture quality is exactly the same when I tried to explain that BR has a sharper image so would someone (IE Jitz) explain one more time that Blu Ray is superior. Quote
Heart Breaker Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 You love to start up old arguments that you forgot you lost, don't you? I can watch both, and personally I'd rather watch a movie on Blu-Ray. To me the picture seems a lot sharper and I feel like I'm taking a step beyond DVD with blu-ray. Might also be that I'm using HDMI for my P$3... at first i asked myself: "what the fuck does don know about image quality?" then i answered: "nothing. thats what." the video quality is the same, dumbass. while we're comparing formats, here: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/feature/franken...qual-238336.php the main differences lie within audio quality and apparently extras. i doubt everyone whos buying blu ray movies can tell the difference between 192kbps and 256kbps mp3 quality let alone the difference between ac3 and dolby truehd. blu ray sells because of the ps3, not because of the quality. most ps3 owners simply arent that tech savvy to know the difference between the two formats. or care. Don, do me a favor. Find a reliable source that states Blu-ray has better picture quality than HD-DVD. I bet you can't. Quit riding Sony's cock, for the last time. Quote
The Don Posted August 20, 2007 Author Posted August 20, 2007 I still say the image is better on Blu Ray. Big whup, wanna fight about it? And how can you say I ride Sony's cock when I hate them? I don't have a single game for my P$3 anymore ffs... Quote
Heart Breaker Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I'm not the one making posts on Smacktalks about the same shit I was proven wrong about over 5 months ago. Oh, and this is not an argument. This is basic facts against your fiction. Quote
Fozy Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Blu-ray is better because it doesn't compress as much, if any. Quote
Joe =/ Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 I'M TOO POOR FOR A PS3 OR AN HD TV OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. FUCK YOU BOTH. Quote
Nemo Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 as jitz said 5 months ago, blu-ray is better because it has a higher storage capacity than an hd-dvd, which means the movies are less compressed and therefore, better quality. however, the compression used for blu-ray movies is near identicle to hd-dvd, which means that the quality is pretty much the same, but the blu-ray disc is left with a fuckton of blank space left because it isnt being fully utilized. think of it this way: hd-dvd vs blu-ray is like the same xvid movie on a pc with a 10gb hdd and one with a 100gb hdd. the latter drive has a higher capacity and could hold a better quality movie, but it isnt. they're the same shit on different mediums. Quote
Fozy Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 That's not entirely true because not every movie will be done the same. Quote
Nemo Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 well thats a given. i never said they couldnt produce a higher quality movie, they just arent. until they're consistent with releasing higher quality movies, its a draw. Quote
scoot Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 as far as im concerned HD-DVD wont be around for as long as blu-ray due to the PS3, i mean already blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD 2-1 imo quallity diffrence will be minimal, and also, Don, consider that the HD-DVD that your watching is probably from the xbox 360 HD DVD drive. it has to go through a USB cable, which i have to say, cant do wonders for the image. Quote
jitz Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Ok I'll sum it up, right now there isn't a huge difference, but it is noticeable. My opinion sticks pretty closely to Sony's when it comes to Blu Ray's superiority over not only HD DVD but also X Box 360 games. While the difference now is minimal, the difference in 3 - 4 years time will be huge. Like how the original batch of DVD look shit compared to the latest 300 DVD (example only, lets not start another arguement on how awesome the movie is), in 3 years time when compression methods have moved forward to fully realise these new formats, the Blu Ray's capacity will blow HD DVD away. Of course at the end of the day it all comes down to your set up at home, lets face it, you're really not going to know the difference unless you have the latest and greatest in hifi equipment. Anything less than a HD TV capable of 1080i, alongside a good (keyword being good) 5.1 setup, you won't know any better. Blu Ray is outselling HD DVD atleat 2 to 1, so the decision by these companies is baffling. Michael Bay has now refused to do Transformers 2 (according to his blog) after hearing of this decision, he simply wants everyone to be able to buy his movies. Exclusivity in movies sucks. This is a shit time to be a gamer, and a shit time to be a movie fan. In conclusion, pure facts state Blu Ray is superior, it's faster and holds way more. It's simply up to movie studios to upgrade their techniques to take advantage of it. EDIT - For scoot's point on the USB cable driven X Box 360 HD DVD player. It's widely regarded as a fairly average HD DVD player, meanwhile the PS3 is a superb Blu Ray player (and DVD player too). EDIT AGAIN - And Blu Ray should be cheaper for TV box sets too (when these formats take off...if ever). More episodes per disc means less printing and less discs, means cheaper. Quote
Aero Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 until there is a clear victor, and the price drops ALOT i have no interest in either format. at the end of the day, i'd feel happier spending Quote
Nemo Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 i concede my original statement that blu-ray is the better medium: http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/CES...50GB_HD_DVD/422 it all comes down to personal preference and budget. why spend $500 for a ps3 (or pretty much any blu-ray player) when i can get an hd-dvd player for pretty much half the price? its one thing if blu-ray was better, but fuck paying twice the price for the same shit. this argument is moot. if someone owns a blu-ray player and one of their favorite movies is hd-dvd exclusive, then they'll be forced to buy an hd-dvd player - and vice versa. so yeah, everyone will end up owning players for both formats, its inevitable. as far as releases on both formats go, its a coin toss. since retailers are also starting to go exclusive, ones choice can very well be based on where they get their movies, another one could be based on price or whatever. im sticking with hd-dvd. if the movie i want is blu-ray exclusive, i'll pick it up on regular dvd (as aero mentioned, the quality isnt THAT bad), or download and burn it to dvd myself. fuck blu-ray...in the little hole in the middle of the disc... Nemo Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 blu-ray outselling hd-dvd 2:1 doesnt make it the better format and i pretty much disproved everything else he said. decision revers'd! Quote
Heart Breaker Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Don, did you not even read Sal's reply to Jitz or were you too busy riding Sony's cock again. Quote
Nemo Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Don, did you not even read Sal's reply to Jitz or were you too busy riding Sony's cock again. the point of this thread was to get jitz to make a reply that would support his side of a petty argument you two had or are having. i doubt he read any of my replies because hes...i dunno...stupid. fortunately, i dont give a fuck what don reads. i just like arguing with jitz : D Quote
jitz Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 I said the difference is minimal now, I can't see why anyone would have a problem with me saying that. And just pulling back to one of Aero's comments... i'd feel happier spending Quote
Nemo Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 paramount used hogan to threaten bay. i bet they set up the whole deal to sell hogans house to bay so hogan knows where he lives if he causes any more trouble. Quote
