Skater Jake is X-tremely lucky

Article from: The Daily Telegraph

THE Sydney skateboarder who crash-landed after plunging 15m in a US competition says he is undaunted by his serious accident and plans to return to competition in a few weeks.

Jake Brown, who suffered bruising of the liver and lung, stress fractures in his vertebrae, severe whiplash and a broken wrist, said he was looking forward to getting back on his skateboard to perform dangerous aerial stunts.

"We have a tour stop in Portland in three weeks," Brown, 32, said yesterday.

"Hopefully, I'll be ready for that."

Brown was charging for gold at the X Games Big Air event in Los Angeles on Friday when was knocked unconscious in the horror crash - and amazed thousands of fans by getting up and walking away.

The California-based extreme sports star initially completed two full spins on the mega-ramp, but seconds later lost control of his skateboard, freefalling for 15m to the bottom of the ramp.

The force of the landing jettisoned his shoes metres away and left many in the crowd convinced he was dead.

Brown said while he was plummeting through the air, he made a split-second decision to turn and land backwards to protect his face.

"I was looking down at the ground and I thought 'I don't want to smash my face off' so I turned around to take it to the legs, the back and the head and just disperse the energy of the slam to a couple of different points," he said.

"I was out cold for 30 seconds to a minute so there wasn't much pain - shoes off, lights out."

The high-flying skater, who has seen the video footage of the accident about 20 times, admitted he should probably be dead.

"I guess so but I survived," he said.

"Each time I see the footage, it sinks in a little harder.

"This has got to be the hardest one (fall) I've ever taken - hopefully there won't be a harder one but you never know."

The competition's medical staff came under fire in the US after allowing Brown to get up and walk about ten minutes after the shocking fall, rather than immobilising him due to his likely spinal injuries.

Brown, who eventually went to hospital at the urging of friends several hours after the accident, said X Games medical officials were not at fault.

"I don't think I gave them much choice," he said.

"I was getting up no matter what they did because I just wanted to make sure my body was in one piece.

"I just felt like I didn't have to go to the hospital because I could walk but I had a lot of pain so it was better to go get checked out with x-rays and MRIs."

Brown, who spent two nights in hospital, said his parents saw the accident on television in Australia before he had a chance to let them know he was okay.

"They called me to find out if I was alive," he laughed.

"They just made sure that I was still ticking."

Brown - who lives with his wife April in the coastal resort town of Carlsbad, near San Diego - turned professional in 1997 and moved to California shortly after that to pursue his dream.
