dont know if you guys will get to see the final for quite some time but I have a week to create an A3 poster for a new rock night me and my friend are promoting in coventry.

Ive set myself the arduous challenge of trying to create most of it tonight. I started it earlier and its all free form with no concept other than to draw the eye, and I thought it might be interesting to post updates as im doing it on here because ive nowt better to do as the kettles bost.

yep working from the top down, and the bottom section ive sorta drawn is a rough idea for all the info

you can have the full sized image when im done and get it printed up yourself lazy twatter (actually you gave me a good idea there, itd be good promotion if i got a tshirt done with it on and chilled around town with it.)

edit:this is taking fucking ages, but sort of getting there

some of the edging detail is lost when its shrunk to 72dpi, obviously, but you can see the full detail of it in the light grey part ive left on by accident.

Doubt itll be done tonight AS im not going to be able to find out the text I need to put it on. bugger!

the rows of stars under the beetle (?) look awkward. im not a fan of the curvy things on the sides of its mandibles either.

other than those two nitpicks, its fucking awesome. great fuckin job.

Will likely end up mirroring the left hand side so thats why its unbalanced at the moment

edit: i definitely think it does work better without the stars to be honest.

Starting to worry about how much ink exactly this will rape me of.

It's like you've mirrored some parts and completely changed other parts. I just dunno if it's a good thing or not.

There also seems to be contrasting elements with soft and hard areas. The cog wire things look awesome, but the outside with the dots and some 'pretty' shapes just doesn't seem to fit. I dunno, you're the expert.

I'm loving it though.

I know what you mean about the chopping and changing but I think it was all for the best, (else I wouldnt have done it)

I also see what you mean about the contrast between harsh and soft. Time will tell if it balances out if im honest. I sort of masked off the bottom and focused on the top left quadrant, and it sort of seems balanced enough, but definitely more thought will be required on the lower half IF it is to be balanced (or, if i wish for it to not be balanced, to draw the eye to the lower half it should be simpler?)

Neat idea with the 'rocker' hands.

I can't decide between no stars or stars ... both look great.

You're putting alot of detail into this, i'm sure all this hard work will be worth it.

getting rid of the stars was a great move. the gears look great.

the left and right dont have to be perfectly symmetrical, but itd be nice if there was more going on on the right, just to balance it out a little.

also, the perfectly straight edge under the gears doesnt seem all that chaotic like the rest of the image. then again, it doesnt have to unless theres something like text going under it.

its deliciously random. keep it up.

thats just where i put a base down to work on a section, im doing the lower half.

Yeah itll be best if the two halves arent perfectly symmetrical but i like as much symmetry as i can get away with

Im flirting with the stars again... decent idea? it might lead on to a little banner in the center with some prelim info on it

I also want to take the hands all the way around the outer edges of the circles but I havent taken any new renders of the hands yet.

Tomorrows job is sorting out the forms at the top. They are too bold. And to do more work on the gears, maybe make a pattern out of them of sorts as they look too background-y.

Any other suggestions would be lovely for when i wake up and any ideas for the main body of it would be ace

the bottom set of hands and the stars arent doing much other than cluttering the area. the bottom row of hands are pretty pointless since you can hardly see them, or make out what they are.

the stars could fit nice somewhere in the image, but i dont think they're going to look great anywhere in the curved rows they're in. perhaps you can randomly place them in empty areas or something.

this isnt much of a suggestion, but you could just leave the top alone for a bit and work on the rest. it should give you a better idea of what else you need to do or what you should get rid of.

Having just woken up with a fresh eye I definitely see what you mean about the bottom hands. what was i thinking!

oh, yeah, blatantly, itd be an honor. Wait until the thing is finished before you decide if you like it though... it could all go horribly wrong from here on.

But if it gets finished and you dont like it, let me know via PM or email and I can work with you to get you something you do like, and then provide you with the file for print.

Anyway wont be updating for a couple of days as i have to go home to coventry in a few hours. Ill probably be in the uni comp labs working on this the next few evenings though so Ill post in a couple of days max.

Yeah my first thoughts were exactly the same as Sal's comments. The bottom hands have gottta go, and the stars do clutter it up. Maybe try just one of the curved rows of stars where the bottom hands currently are ?

Mind you, that would probably still look cluttered.

But whatever, trial and error, keep doing what your doing.

I am so pissed off right now.

The file was lagging my PC when I used liquify on some text, and Id done about 2 hours on it last night bringing the total up to 7. Just finished the top half which looked THE SHIT (much better than here imo) and so I cropped it to paste in to a new document to work with.

I do all that, undo and undo and undo again so its fullsized again and saved. But apparently I didnt. so when I close the file and reopen, oh fuck, its about A6 size now is all I have left.

FUCKS SAKE

7 hours gone, no back up (its at home) and the deadline is approaching fucking fast.

no i did not. Well i sort of did. I tried doing a new poster, got stuck 3 hours in and then went out for dinner which was nice but you dont need to know that.

Then I did some fliers which I do have finished but of course the venue messed us about an hour before we started it so now theres no point to any fliers etc so that was a complete and utter waste of time. Yeah, I was annoyed.

I have some new work which I will be posting within the week, I think. Depends on whether I can get time to go home or not.
