samountain Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 In the order I liked them (chronologically), not in the order in which I like them (one over the other) 1. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP: Yeah... haha. It's a fun CD. The mixing is well done, the lyrics are good. It's just fun to listen to. Eminem was the best rap artist out there. Don't know about his last 2 CDs though. This CD basically sums up the last year of primary school, which is strange... --- 2. Nofx - Punk in Drublic: Shaped who I am, having heard it in year 8. Basically got me into punk music (though I listened to a bit of punk before). One of their most solid releases. --- 3. Thrice - Illusion of Safety: It took me a while to "get" this album but man, when I did, woah. One of those albums I'll never get sick of. I just couldn't even listen to punk music after this, this album was better than anything I'd heard. I spent months trying to look for anything similar to this, but couldn't find anything. --- 4. Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose: Hah. Yeah. I guess it further moved me away from just straight-forward punk and opened up my tastes a bit more. I didn't like the new album too much, but love all their older stuff. So much energy. --- 5. The Mr. T Experience - Milk Milk Lemonade: I don't know what it is about this album. It just seemed so different to me. It gave me images of an American culture, but like, the poorer small county white trash kind of stuff. It just worked really well. Everyone should listen to this album. The witty lyrics are so good. --- 6. Strung Out - An American Paradox: Yeah... nothing needs to be said about this album. I was looking for a band like Thrice and found something just as good. This album is a little more poppy than the rest of their stuff but it got me into them. --- 7. Mr Bungle - Self Titled: Catchy tunes. Lots of different styles of music... Opened up my ears to a lot of different styles. Stuff I've never heard. I hardly ever listen to this album anymore, but it's great. I started liking a lot of different stuff after this. Death metal, Devin Townsend, pop, hip-hop. --- 8. Lagwagon - Hoss: Reminded me why punk is so good again. I was going through a stage where music needed people wanking their instruments, but this album is proof that simplicity is best. --- 9. Rx Bandits - The Resignation: Nothing is as honest, as fun, as hard and as soft, nothing draws images in my head like this one does. Like Illusion of Safety, I'm pretty sure this is one of those albums I'll never get sick of. --- 10. Lucero - Tennessee: Ben Nichols is a really REALLY good storyteller. Everything he says paints a good picture, and it makes you appreciate his culture and stuff. It's really cool. Just that Western American culture... Good stuff. Yeah... Quote
essjay Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 1.eminem-the eminem show 2.stereophonics-word gets around 3.jay-z-the black album 4.oasis-whats the story morning glory 5.50 cent-get rich or die trying 6.editors-the back room 7.dr dre-2001 8.blink 182-take off your pants jacket 9.kanye west-the college dropout 10.we are scientists-with love and squalor all of the albums above are all quality,if youve not heard a few of them,i advise you check them out.... good thread Quote
Aero Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 not in any order- 1. RHCP- californication 2. the darkness - permission to land 3. tenacious D - tenacious D 4. Stereophonics - word gets around 5. aerosmith - toys in the attic 6. aerosmith - permanent vacation 7. Queen Greatest hits boxset ( i know, best of album, tecnically cheating) 8. Metallica - Metallica 9. Meatloaf - Bat out of hell 2 10. bon jovi crossroads (i cant be bothered to think any more lol) Quote
Thom Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Damnit Sahill, you've made me actually think. Argh. I'll get back to this later on. Quote
jitz Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Yeah I'll bite. 10. The defining Unwritten Law album. It really makes you wish they'd just call it a day after 'Here's To The Mourning'. They have like zero original band members left. 9. Depression at it's best. There's 16 tracks, quite a few of them are filler. Looking past those uncovers an album devoid of any subtlety. If you hate yourself and want to further that hatred - anything by Stabbing Westward is for you. The follow up to this features less industrial stylings, but keeps to the depressed nature, possibly giving the tone a more...invasive nature as it's a very deceptive album, it's self titled. 8. Laugh out loud funny. Turn it up and just listen, nonsense never sounded so good. 7. Guns N' Roses only needed one album and a song off a double album to be remembered around the world. The only band who can lay a better claim is Lynard Skynard. 6. Picking an Incubus album is like choosing a favourite son, it makes you realise that although they all have there good points, one just stands out for whatever reason. While the more recent albums are what made them famous, every now and they'll through in something that'll remind you they haevn't forgotten where they came from. A Certain Shade of Green is godly, so is New Skin. 5. The Finnish tracklisting, not the shitty American version that's flooded msuic stores everywhere. Your Sweet Six Six Six and Wicked Game simply don't belong, and they fucked with the album's progression. I thought HIM was a wanky soft band that couldn't play before I heard this album. Turns out they were really just a soft band that can't play who rock out occasionally, underneath that are love songs that you either 'get' or dont. They are learning to play their instruments though, it's just taken 5 albums. 4. Blue Oyster Cult is one of those bands that constantly appears in the strangest places.just when you think the world has forgotten about them. This is the album that put them on their feet. Godzilla which is featured on Guitar Hero is from the follow up to this album, they'll appear on a few more no doubt, they're saving '(Don't Fear) The Reaper'. 3. Everyone thought Slipknot was dead. They came back with an album completely different from the last, and with only vague similarities to the their first. It jaded die hard fans of their aggresive metal style, but most people saw this as a far superior album to what had come before. It showed the band has the maturity to survive, it only took them to nearly kill each other to get there. 2. Smashing Pumpkins would go on to experiment afforded by the success of this album. This is just rock at it's finest. If Mellon Collie wasn't a double album with an entire albums worth of filler it could be a contender. 1. They are my gods, I will worship them till the day I die. Their first album was crunching, their second added fluidity and melody; this is just something else. In a musical landscape where heavy rock is being overlooked by the mainstream, they stand up and get noticed. I think it's required listening if you're planning on picking up an instrument as every guy in this band can play great, which is not often seen today. Check em out in Guitar Hero 2! WORST COVER IN THE GAME! EDIT - Oh and they're in no particular order, bar Avenged Sevenfold Quote
Aero Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 bah, i knew i was overlooking something, appetite for destruction replaces bon jovi crossroads! cheers man Quote
Thom Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Ok, I've been thinking about it (Dunno why I'm taking this so seriously, actually) and the first one I can think of and have no doubts about putting it in there is... Pendulum - Hold Your Colour Possibly the greatest album ever released by a Drum N Bass artist, if not the greatest dance music album of all time. Fourteen tracks, and not a single one of them is filler. I've sat and listened to it over five times back to back in one evening, and I haven't got sick of it, or even noticed. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it, let alone hearing the tracks. It pisses me a off a little that they've become so mainstream because of people hearing Slam and claiming to be DnB fans to sound diverse, but people were doing that to The Prodigy years ago, and that's just me being a prick to some extent. There are so many influences going into the different tracks; Hip Hop, Jungle, Metal, Trance, there literally is something for everyone, and I've never met a single person who can't name at least one song from this album that they love. A strong contender for my favourite album of all time. Incredible stuff. Download: Slam Another Planet Tarantula Still Grey Quote
Big Bizang Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 (edited) I love this topic. It's the only one where I care about everybody's posts. Here's mine. It took ages to work out what order they should be in. 10 Rilo Kiley - More Aventurous Not my usual kind of stuff, quite country and very indie but that doesn't stop it from being incredible. The stories the lyrics tell are brilliant and every track sounds honest and unprententious which is a rarity these days. Some beautiful ballads and Jenny Lewis has the sexiest voice ever. The only album me and the missus agree on. Download: Absense of God, Portions for Foxes, Accidntl Deth. 9 Radiohead - OK Computer I know it's one of the most overrated albums of all time and I don't think there's one person who hasn't heard it but there's a reason why it was voted Best Album Ever. Don't need to say much about it. It's intelligent, grown up music writing. Genius. Download: Let Down, Exit Music (For a Film) 8 Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous My favourite album of last year. Mixes heavy rocking out choons with a slow love song or two which is a new experiment for this second album. The best UK hardcore band in my opinion and one that never lost their sense of humour or common touch. A lot of raw energy, a lot of roaring and a lot of fantastic melodies. Rock done right. Download: Everytime a Teenager Listens to Drum 'n' Bass a Rockstar Dies, Nobody Loves You, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em 7 Million Dead - Harmony No Harmony Much the same vein as the previous one but by a band much more politically charged (I hate saying that about bands) and one that is sadly no longer with us. Turner's lyrics could be essays on society that had been set to music. Very aggressive, very urgent. World weary and intelligent. Again, lyrics are incredible. Download: To Whom it May Concern, After the Rush Hour, Living the Dream 6 Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine Just fun. Balls out rocking fun. And seeing as it's made by just two guys, a drum kit, a bass and a lot of fuzz pretty fucking impressive. Some really cool dance influences too. Download: Blood on our Hands, Turn it Out, Sexy Results 5 Muse - Origin of Symmetry Could be the best British album ever made (fuck off Beatles). This album saw Muse realise their potential and escape from Radiohead's shadow. Dramatic and epic in places, Bellamy's voice is amazing and all three musicians are fucking ninjas. Includes one of my all time favourite songs, Citizen Erased. Download: Citizen Erased, Darkshines 4 Green Day - Insomniac Forget Dookie, this is real Green Day. Dark and edgy and not at all like the pop they would descend into. It's what US punk is all about. Download: Stuck With Me, Panic Song, Walking Contradiction 3 Pulp - This is Hardcore It was a tough choice, which Pulp album to put on. But in the end it had to be This is Hardcore. A total backlash from the huge pop success of Different Class, which made them famous, this album showed that Cocker really wasn't comfortable with the celebrity that had been thrust upon him. The result is something dark and unsettling. The seedy subject matter really suits Cocker's storytelling style. Download: This is Hardcore, The Fear, Sylvia 2 Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here My oldest selection but very important. People will tell you Dark Side of the Moon was their Magnum Opus but this is just as essential in my opinion. It's pretty much a letter to Syd Barret and the title track is a masterpiece. I'm not going to suggest that you download anything it's best experienced as a whole. Shine on you Crazy Diamond. 1 Garbage - Version 2.0 The first album I fell in love with. It still stands the test of time. Shirley Manson's voice is brilliant, the production is outstanding, not one dud track. It even closes with their best song and quite possibly my favourite ever, You Look So Fine. There's enough here to spark off a lifetime of musical loves and that's exactly what it did to me. It's why I listen to rock/alternative stuff at all, it's that important. Download: You Look So Fine, Medication, The Trick is to Keep Breathing LONGEST. POST. EVER. CS Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 OK heres my list. 10. As I Lay Dying-Frail Words Collapse Not that much to really say about this band, 94 hours was the song that got me into them because of the crazy bass drum beat. 9. Inked In Blood- Lay Waste The Poets I've just started to listen to these guys, great band. 8. Dragonforce- Inhuman Rampage I stumbled apon this band back during the summer when I accidently bought the wrong cd, I was going to take it back but decided to keep it. 7. Throwdown-Vedetta The first time I heard these guys was at a concert, its still one of my favourite bands and cd. 6. Alexisonfire-Crisis I've liked all the alexis cds but this one beats the rest, theres just something different about it then the other two. 5. Killswitch Engage I love this cd, I almost ruined for myself and listened to it soo much when I first got it. I love the vocals in this band. 4. AFI-Sing The Sorrow AFI Sing The Sorrow, this cd is epic. In my opinion one of the greatest cds ever, every song on it is amazing. 3. Thrice- The Artist In The Ambulance Thrice, best punk band hands down. This cd has some great songs on it and its worth a download. 2. Comeback Kid- Wake The Dead Oh Comeback Kid. This is my favourite hardcore band ever, I've been too so many Comeback Kid concerts its funny. I love this band, they're from Winnipeg and had amazig vocals. Wake The Dead is my altime favourite song. I went to the Scott Wade farewell show in September, it was the best concert I've ever been to. They ended with Wake The Dead and a bunch of people got on stage(small show) and started moshing on stage and I got to song the choris of the song, it was one of the greatest nights ever. 1. Underoath-They're Only Chasing Safety Underoath, they were the first screamo or whatever kind of band you want to call them band I listened to. When I first heard this cd I was blown away, I couldn't believe how good they were. I think I was 12 when I started to listen to them and I've gone through a bunch of bands but they've always stayed the best, the singing, screaming, lyrics, every part of the band is great. Quote
