i bought a box of cereal yesterday, and there was this ad on the back asking for 2 UPCs and a minimum donation of $5 for a pink ribbon keychain. on ebay, people are paying hundreds to thousands of dollars for pink breast cancer ducks designed and signed by mediocre celebrities (except william shatner and john madden, they rule).

im not saying breast cancer isnt bad or anything, but i ask, why is it such a big fucking deal? perhaps im missing something here, but theres like 100s of different types of cancers and i dont see any ads for them on my cereal box. imo, leukemia is far worse than a titty tumor and it doesnt even have its own ribbon.

and even if it does, i havent seen anything about it. also, what happened to aids? nobody cares about aids anymore?

Sal these campaigns are run by charities, Pink Ribbon Day which focuses on breast cancer awareness was on Monday worldwide.

In Australia the Leukaemia Foundation runs the World's Greatest Shave, which was a few months ago I think.

The reason charities don't advertise every cancer all at once is

1- They only have so much advertising money and,

2- People only have so much money to donate to these cahrities at one time, they stagger the events to maximise donations.

Some cancers don't get the greastest awareness campaigns, that's because the charities that focus on them either don't have the donations to fund an advertising campaign, or spend the donations given to them towards actual research and not on awareness.

If you want things to change - donate more money to the charities you think aren't getting enough exposure.

i knew this wouldnt be a popular thread, but im glad it actually managed to get some decent replies.

now, i may have come off as "slagging" the disease off, but that wasnt my intent. its the exposure that bothers me. also im talking about illnesses in general here, not just cancer. theres hundreds of different kinds of cancers and a lot of them are pretty rare. its damn near impossible to have a huge charity for each and every one of them.

i just cant believe its gotten to the point where theres breast cancer ads everywhere, yet other illnesses seem to get not even a fraction of the publicity. seriously, the last aids awareness ad i saw was on a condom commercial - which is well...awkward. there are diseases that are far more common than breast cancer, less gender biased and have significantly higher mortality rates than breast cancer does.

heart disease kills more people (in this country) than all the cancers combined. i think it gets plugged in cheerios commercials or something. havent seen many AHA commercials or anything related.

im not really sure where im going with this as i cant even remember why i made this thread in the first place. something to do with the cereal box. so yeah, i have my opinion. its a cold one, but i think theres some validity behind it....i think.

I have th agree with slurms breast cancer is way over advertised when its not such a big deal its treatable and stopable ubnlike AIDS where u can prolong your life by a bit but u will ultimatly die and u dont see that much advertising for aids do you? and there are pl;enty of boobies out there no need to worry about that so i say doen with breast cancer advertisments and more advertisements on more important things like AIDS and other incurable at the moment diseases

if its far more common than other types/other diseasesd than that means far more people already know about it than other diseases and dont need to be told again and dont need to be advertised as much as not RARE/not well known diseases that are very dangerous need to be advertised alot. not for example breast cancer which is so common practically every1 knows aobut it without even reading advertisments. because its freaking being talked about so friggin much.

just because it is very very well known doesn't change what breast cancer does to women its the research that people do that changes what breast cancer does to women and if you cut the advertisemnts for breast cancer by 80% you will be saving alot more money which could be used to research cures and other solutions for breast cancer and yet still get the point accross.

this way cures and other solutions will be found much quicker and less women will die from breast cancer

and i bet you didn't even think for 1 minuite that possible outcome did you?
