Paid Mods Not Allowed (Updated 10-22-17)

Recommended Posts

After careful consideration and conversations with game developers, Paid Mods are no longer allowed on the forum under any circumstances.

This includes:

- Charging a user in order to download a mod.
- Requesting a monetary donation in order to download a mod.

Why is this change happening?

This change has been brought about due to legal issues that have arisen regarding the sale of 2K created/edited files.

We understand that modding is time consuming and many modders would like something back in return for their hard work, however charging to download files that originally were created by game developers breaks copyright laws and leaves not only the individual but also our website liable for not removing these paid links.

I understand that some modders will feel disgruntled at this change, however you are still free to place a donation button in your mod topics so people can leave a voluntary donation.

Adfly and other services which provide pay-per-click services are still allowed and encouraged to allow modders to earn money back for their hard work. We'll also be providing additional ways for respected modders to boost their exposure and open up their mods to a wider audience in the near future to help maximise pay-per-click revenue, so stay tuned.

Mod Tools

In regards to Mod Tools, tools such as X-Packer require the user to make a monetary donation similar to Paid Mods, however there is no rule against Paid Tools providing they do not include any files from the games developer.

Going forward while we there is no rule against Paid Tools, we will be actively encouraging the use Freeware Tools over Paid Tools as a means of making modding more accessible and open to everyone to help the community grow.

Paid Work

In regards to paid work, should modders want to offer their services to create mods at the request of a paying user, then advertising you are accepting paid work is allowed in your mod topics and signature, however creating topics solely for this purpose is not.

*NEW* In pursuit of making threads not exclusively for commissions, any directly commissioned pieces that are showcased on the site must be made available to the public on Smacktalks within 1 week of being sent to the original client. (Person that paid for the work)  Users found to not be following this rule may have previews removed of threads locked in addition to traditional warnings.

Questions?

If you have any questions in regards to these changes or would like to know if something is allowed, please leave your question in a reply and we will get back to you with an answer.

Bannock is working on free alternatives to X-Rey and X-Packer though.

The only remaining paid tool that has functionality not covered in other free tools is X-Rey.

New rule has been added to clarify the previous rule for regarding threads that are only used for commissions.
