The above video contains a presentation by Euclideon who previously claimed they'd developed a way of replacing polygons in game graphics with their new atom technology to remove the limitations of the amount of polygons on screen. To show the power of the technology, they created an island that is 1km in side and contains an insane 21,062,352,435,000 polygons (21 trillion, 62 billion, 352 million, 435 thousand polygons).

The detail is incredible, it even goes as far as showing the dirt on the ground which is made up of individual gains of dirt instead of the regular photo of the ground you get (2:37 in the video).

They say it'll be ready to give to games developers in the next 2 months, so i'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of results it produces, we could see a huge jump in graphics in the coming years without the need to move to the next generation of consoles.

It does look awesome but there are some issues than could arrise, for one the demo shown is purely grahpical only there is no form of interactvity sure the engine looks nice but how intensive will it be on a system resources and how will it hold up once shaders, physics, complex lighting and AI are introduced.

Another major problem is that production cost are already very high for AAA titles and if a team tried to create models this advanced then dev times increases and so does cost, to me this just doesn't seem viable at the moment.

I think it can work with big named company and games like crysis and COD.

Well for one Crytek will not use this neither will Epic purely for the fact they create their own engines they license out. Also some stuff that comes into play that just makes this company look stupid is one, think about how many models are on screen from the dirt to trees etc all those models need to be created and even if they are reduced in size they still take up a lot of space.

Number 2 textures, it is currently impossible to have high res textures for all those models, think about it having a very fine detailed character model matched with a a current high res texture. The amount of memory needed to match textures for the model just wouldn't be viable.

Also want to know what is pathetic? they have an engine that runs at 20fps that features crap repetitive models, no dynamic lighting, no physics, no form of interaction what so ever.

Another thing is 99% of the footage they show are game based around current console hardware which is 5 years old so games are limited, remember this trailer from epic a littlle while ago? now this impresses me because it is all possible.

I'm writing an article about this tech so I'll be posting it up soon.

I never seen that Unreal engine demo, was it from E3? It looks amazing, possibly the best graphics i've seen.

As for the Euclideon video, I think you have to reserve judgement on it until they show what it can do when proper textures, lighting, animation, etc. is involved. At the moment it's nothing more than a video to show that it's possible to fit that many models on screen at the same time without any slowdown.

Here is my blog post which covers most of the problems with this engine.

I would love if something came along to improve graphics but the level they are taking about is bordering on CGI level and when that happens there has to be a catch. Oh and thats for checking out the blog.
