July 8, 2007 - For some, the slimline PStwo is already too small for comfort. But believe it or not, Sony has managed to cut the fat even further!

Japan's Nikkei Business Daily reports today that the new model SCPH-79000 of the PS2 hardware features a drop in weight from 900 to 600 grams. The system's AC adapter has also dropped from 350 to 250 grams.

The paper reports that the weight loss was achieved by a reduction of parts. This has also resulted in a drop in production costs, something that's sure to benefit Sony's bottom line.

Sony has started shipping the new hardware, which is visually identical to previous versions.

THey might want to make it compete with wii since ps3 has no chance whatsoever and this also means goodbye yto the second price drop we want. this is good cause i plan on getting some games for ps2 like svr 2008,nba 2k8, nhl 2008,maybe spiderman friend or foe it sounds ok.

I personally have a slim ps2 and i love it but its small already

What's suprising is the reduction of parts, the slimline already has very little in it. It's mostly a heatsink. I had mine open the other day (long story) and it's quite a tidy package inside.

ha ha yeah, to think last year was originally gonna be the last time some game developers made anything for ps2... then the ps3 was delayed/too difficult to programme for so they made another, now the ps3 is too expensive and unpopular so they've had to make ANOTHER lol

Most of the gamers have a PS2 (maybe more consoles but certainly a PS2).If they would stop making them they would lose too much money because the PS3 isn't really SO popular because of the price and such.

erm, you're almost right - stop making the games on ps2 and ppl will be forced to buy a new console (which they will), sonys problem is that, as you pointed, out the ps3 costs too much, so most ppl would more likely buy a 360 or a wii.

disagreed. sony racks the excrusives. even if they discontinue ps2 games, that'll just result in buying the same games for the xbox/wii instead.

not even solid snake can save the ps3 because mgs4 is gonna be ported to the xbox.

Well sony lost their hope with ps3 and they dont wanna "lose money" by lowering the price so they might as well keep ps2 for maximum 2009
