But you can not put any money down now, then go to store when the game is released, at your own convenience and pick it up then. In my plan, you actually never pay for nothing, which is a pro over your mythical pre-ordered game that won't play on any Earthly consoles.

Pre-ordering is shit. Especially on a game that has zero chance of selling out. If there were a pre-order bonus of any worth, like say a demo so you can go home and sadly realise the game you just put a non-refundable pre-order on sucks arse. What does your pre-order get you over some guy who goes in the day it comes out and buys the exact same game? A piece of paper? Being $10 short for six months? The ability to brag to your mates that you own one fifth of a game that is even released yet!? Your mates will sure be impressed.

Microsoft and Bungie can probably fund the entire development cycle of Halo 4 simply on the pre orders. This is the last game that needs to be pre ordered, Microsoft is going to print enough copies for not only even gamer in the world that owns an X-Box 360, but also their dogs and grandmothers, so their behemoth can take up even square inch of shelf space in every retailer around the world.

The great thing about pre ordering is no defence can be made for it, at it's very core it's flawed. Essentially there to help retailers with cash flow, because in the lead up to a big game, they don't sell anything. Wow, great reward. Pre orderers are idiots.

Where I pre-order games at, putting 5 dollars down (to guarantee your copy) counts as part of your payment. For example, if the game costs $60 and you put $5 down on it. You'll only have to pay $55. And you're also guaranteed a copy. I don't know about you, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I understand if the game has a chance of selling out. UFC isn't going to sell out, ever. Very few games ever sell out.

The SvR games sell out here frequently. It would not surprise me at all to see this UFC game sell just as well.

Typically Gamestop and EB Games only get enough to cover preorders and a handful more. There were quite a few times a game would come out (for some reason hockey games go like hot cakes with crack on top around here) and we'd get three or four to cover the preorders and then like 7 more. Those 7 could easily go in a day then the next day I had to give everyone the preorder speech.

In other words, if you're really excited about the game, just preorder it and be safe.

I'm not quite familiar (don't mind the spelling) with UFC but the game looks freakin' good but you cannot say much about it with one video, just wait and see.

it's the closest ive personally ever seen a game come to looking real....by that i mean looking as though your watching TV, not some game rendered on a gaming machine. also, im one in favour of pre orders, i intend on pre ordering GTA IV asap, as well as rock band, this game, i want to demo before hand. but i do see myself buying/renting it on graphics alone. yes i did just say the worst thing a gamer can say, buy or rent a game based on graphics.

normal mapping has made things so much easier for games i swear to god.

This looks quite good though perhaps a little too visceral - some details i seen are a bit OTT. But then the fact its so visceral would fit in with UFC so im moaning for the sake of it. Either way, it does look very good for what it is

nah bro
(double post)
I've had experiences quite recently with not being able to get games when they're out, and I have had to wait. If you choose to pre-order, then you're not going to have to wait. And certain games, I've seen, have had pre-order benefits. I know Ultimate Spiderman came with some bonus crap (And you'll likely pick up on that; by crap I mean things, I just can't remember what. And its semantics - its still free stuff. If you pre-order you dont have to pay any more than you normally would.) if you pre-ordered it, and I've seen other examples.

No ones an idiot for not agreeing with your point of view anyway.

Jitz, your whole argument is wrong solely for the fact that the per-order doesn't add more to the cost of the game itself. It's just a more efficient way of getting a game you want, as soon as it comes and sometimes with perks, e.g. GTA4.

OK wait, I've made a slight error here in typing, let me explain.

Quote

If there were a pre-order bonus of any worth, like say a demo so you can go home and sadly realise the game you just put a non-refundable pre-order on sucks arse.

"If there were a pre-order bonus of any worth", that was eventually going to be followed by a, "then I can understand a pre-order". I obviousy got side tarcked with having a go at pre-ordering shit games only to realise you've had $10 bucks on the worst game of the season for six months. So yes, If there is a pre-order bonus I understand. I understand pre-ordering legitimate Collectors Editions/Limited Editions.

I just think the entire system is fucked when people feel the need to go in and put $5 down on Rainbow Six for no damn reason.

I admit, the gaming scene is wildly different from Australia compared to other parts of the world, and that's probably where my thinking is probably way off.

Fact is these GameStops and EB's are the worst places to be buying games from, period. In Australia EB is full retail price, on every game. They'll price match, but they won't lower there prices to match K Mart 10 feet down, just to slug the fool with the pre order or the sucker mum buying Timmy the latest Pokemon. What fool pays full retail price for a video game? Pre orders lock you in, there's nothing worse than ducking into a deapartment store that day, or a day later and finding the game you bought the day before for a significant amount cheaper just because you preordered from the wrong store. Yeah I'm clearly talking from experience. It's all about consumer choice, and the current system is shit, where a company forces you to make a payment so you're guaranteed to get a 10c disc. The discs exist, they're not sold out, the store just didn't order enough. I'm on the bottom of the video game barrell, a small city in Australia, known to not be even a blip on the radar when it comes to game sales. But I will happily crawl into a store confident the game I want will be there, and if it isn't it will be at another store in a 5 km radius. Because nobody preorders, stores like EB take preorders, but they'll offer a discount on the strategy guide or something as incentive. It's a different mentality, we won't buy invisible products. If it's not on the shelf, we're not interested. So stores carry more stock.

So it comes back to one of my original points, it's not the consumers job to handle a store's cashflow.

I also think Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo like to claim they "sold out all over North America and the UK". It's fake, and the pre order system just buys into it.

to no-ones surprise, im with jitz on this one. the only thing i ever pre-ordered was a wii. cost me like $50 and i didnt even get one on the launch date because fye took more preorders than the amount of consoles they were receiving.

on top of that, they also kept my $50. fuck pre-ordering, i'll just wait in line next time.

also, maybe its because i live in the blessed state of new york which consists of 100s of video game retailers, but the only game i ever had trouble finding due to being sold out was max payne. and that was like 5 years ago or some shit. so once again, fuck preordering.

*EDIT*

as far as the ufc game goes, yeah, that video looks awesome. however, the svr2k7 video looked awesome too. we (hb) shouldnt be hyping this game so much until gameplay videos are out. then we'll have an idea of how good it is.

It costs me 5 dollars to pre-order this video game. Not $50 (Sal.) The price will also go down 5 dollars once I buy the game. Meaning, it's free to pre-order for me. And I live in an area that's not so blessed. Two legit video game outlets are near me. Two. Not hundreds. Games sell out frequently here. Because apparently there's video gamers, there's just not too many video game stores.

So if I'm paying $5 to reserve a $60 game, that will cost me $55 when I go to pay for it, I'm basically pre-ordering for free, am I correct? I can't believe it's even a debate. I'm not telling people to go out and pre-order the game. I'm letting people know that I am. We don't all live in places where video games are flowing like wine.

So yeah. Fuck not being able to pre-order. (Atleast where I live.) You get your money back once you actually buy the game.

Also, I've played THQ's PrideFC game a few years back. It was the best MMA simulation yet. Granted, it definitely isn't the best game on earth, but it was also made in 2002. THQ has had five years (six once the game is released) to understand the sport. I don't think it'll be God's gift to video games, but it will definitely beat the hell out of the old Crave Studios produced UFC games.

i know a guy in game, he lets me preorder for free, means if i change my mind, i can just give him a wee call up and tell him to sell it on.

advantage to preordering is getting double points, this means greater discounts at a later date. also, means that rather than going around 100 shops to find a game, it will be in the 1 store for sure.
