Atari Founder Slams Sony
Bushnell Praises the 360 and Xbox Live.
by Micah Seff

November 8, 2006 - In a recent interview conducted with Red Herring, Nolan Bushnell expressed some astonishing insights into the next-generation console wars. During the interview, the Atari and Chuck E. Cheese founder mostly focused on his recent foray into the world of restaurant entrepreneurship, but managed to find time to weigh in on the future of the impending PlayStation 3 and Wii.

Bushnell seemed to be wholly positive on the future of the Wii, echoing sentiments heard from Nintendo executives regarding the Wii's potential to "expand the market beyond the hardcore." Similarly, Bushnell seemed to have only good things to say about Microsoft's Xbox 360, its easy-to-use authoring tools, and Xbox Live.

His take on the future of the PlayStation 3 was anything but positive, however. Bushnell expressed his distaste for the difficulty of developing for the system, and the "arrogance and capriciousness" which Sony has gotten away with in the past due to its massive installed user base. Bushnell even went so far as to call first party developers "idiots" if they chose to develop for the PS3 rather than the 360.

When asked about the potential success of the PS3 compared to its predecessors, Bushnell blamed Sony's past accomplishments on timing. "They had the right pricing at the right time [and were] almost the accidental winner," said Bushnell. When it comes to the PS3, Bushnell seemed to think that Sony would have a hard time even selling through 1 million units by this time next year. Only time will tell whether or not Bushnell's predictions come true.

When Nolan Bushnell bashes your product, you know you got issues. This guy is in the upper echelon of gaming history and even if he's not doin games anymore, he knows what he's talkin about.

Also right now seeing as how Gamespot has reviewed two P$3 games and they've gottn a 6 and 7, thing aren't looking too good. Resistance better kick ass and Heavy Rain better be P$3 only... then I'd have no choice but to get one.

Here

IGN: There has been a lot of speculation since E3 that Heavy Rain
will go "PS3 only" because of where it was showed. Any truth to that or
can we expect to see it on multiple systems?

Fondaumière: We hear and read a lot of things lately on Heavy
Rain. All I can say is: not everything is true and nothing is written
in stone as we speak. For now, Quantic Dream is working on the
PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms.

this year? seriously, theres a month and 2/3 left of 2006. the 360 has been out for a year already, and i still have no incentive to buy it other than that zombie game (fuck svr, wrestling games suck - even with better graphics).

so yeah, give the ps3 time.

Seriously I see nothing good for the ps3 yet. I will get it when games eventually come out.

Even if it means waiting for mgs4. and i have gotten every mgs game the day they were released.

Xbox 360>PS3
Also next year there isnt many great games either until the end of the year. There is no point buying a ps3 until the end of next year

again, judging the console before playing it. im not saying the ps3 will be the greatest, but its way too early to pass judgement. its so ironic how xbox fans look at the ps3 as a powerhouse with shit games meanwhile, thats what the xbox was when it was released.

to reiterate: the ps3 is expensive. we get it. quit bitching already.

sigh fucking fanboys

I honestly don't understand why people are so passionate about console wars, you have no monetary gain from it.

So the PS3 is coming out a year later than the 360, and higher price tag. So what? It would take an idiot to say it's an exciting prospect right now. It can play the highest quality movie format available, Sony is gambling on it, the consumer will decide. It won't be three guys on a Smacktalks forum either, the people that will decide will be the people with far more money than you.

By the same token the 360's list of killer games is embarrassing. The only game out that is a possible killer franchise is Gears of War and it's so recently landed that the smoke is still billowing from the crater, we'll get a true perception of how the game is in a month when the hype has died down and everyone looks back and goes "yeah it was good, but not as good as Epic told me it was going to be".

Sit back, calm down, give it a year and then draw your battle lines because that's when the PS3 will be heating up (hopefully not as literally as the 360), that's when the Wii will be alive and kicking, and we'll have the best console generation war ever seen. The people who will win will be us, because it's going to take awesome games to get noticed in this generation's market.
