I was decent in graphic design. I was decent at web design. But I fucking hated networking. I should've listened. Damn it. I really should've listened in that class. Anyway, I'm having problems with what to do about my XBOX Live situation. I know I want to hook up the system to the internet. Hell, I don't even have broadband as we speak. But I'm willing to get it so I can get XBOX Live. Now I have a few questions, and if someone could please help me, I'd be more than grateful.

First. A little off-topic, but not really. Can you sign up for XBOX Live on the 360 without having a credit card? If I am required to have a credit card, I'm already screwed.

If I do not need a credit card to be on XBOX Live, then by all means, help me out here.

I plan on getting broadband after I get back from a trip next week. I've decided that the easiest solution for my networking problems is to buy this.

That, my friends, is the XBOX 360 Wireless Networking Adapter. I've heard nothing but good things about it's range. So I'm not all too concerned about that. My problem is a simple networking question. What does the signal try to pick up? Is the signal from the Adapter picking up the signal from the router? Or does it somehow detect the broadband throughout my house without the need of a router?

Basically, what I'm trying to say is, do I need a router in order for my adapter to pick up the broadband signal? If not, I just need the broadband, the XBOX Live starter kit, and the networking adapter and I'm good to go?

Fuck. I apologize for how fucking retarded I am. I've heard Scoot and Iain are very big helps in the networking department. But I've noticed Jitz knows quite a bit about what people tend to bitch about in the gaming forums.

If you help me, I'll love you forever.

if im right you can use a switch

you would need a wireless router in order to use the wireless adapter, and then you would have to find out wether its a cable router or an ADSL router. and even then you might strugle setting it up, its amazing how many people cant set up a wireless router, but its obvious why they cant. my advice would be the linksys WRT54G, ive had this router for a long time now, and its nothing short of great. iain just recently needed a new router and got another linksys because of how good they are.

my STRONG advice to you would be to fit another network card into a spare PCI slot on the PC that is (or will be) connected to the broadband connection. from there run a crossover cable from the second network card to the XBOX 360 and enable ICS (internet connection sharing). once thats all done, providing the correct ports are open the XBOX live setup should be a breeze

man, you can go to game and buy an xbox live gold code for CASH and then input the code to your computer, switch or credit card not needed.

also, the cheaper option would be to get internet with a router, most give free wireless routers now, and just hook it up via cable, is always more reliable than wifi imo and that wee wireless adapter is quite expensive imo.

.......or you could pay a decent provder and get a decent service, ADSL is the biggest con of our century so far imo. personally i would go with a cable internet provider (NTL or blueyonder telewest preferably). ive been with blueyonder for years and years and had no problem. they have those new adverts that say

'cable, if you can, you should' and thats very true. if your gonna go with ADSL, my advice is to go with BT. they may be more expensive, but everything runs direct from them with any ADSL provider. the main draw with BT is the fact that if you have a problem they have a great service, and can check things at the exchange in a faster manner than if you were to go from say for instance.........plus net. also areofreak, that shitty USB thing that goes in the XBOX 360 probably costs more than the price of a PCI LAN card and a crossover cable put together. seriously though dont cheap out and go with a terrible ADSL provider otherwise your xbox may be doomed to a life of live lag.

Well today, I called up Charter Communications (A provider of broadband internet as well as cable television in the U.S.) and they said they could easily set up a wireless network in my home. They would provide and install the wireless router as well. Which is great because the only thing that confuses me about this whole situation is the router. It's a bit expensive for the installation, but after that, it shouldn't be too bad.

Once I get the wireless network set up, I plan on buying the XBOX 360 Wireless Internet Adapter. I've heard the set up is a breeze, even with a networking dumbass like myself, it should be quite simple. So after that, I'll probably purchase the XBOX Live Starter Kit and be set to finally play online.

I hope all of that made sense. :(

boo hoo to you, setting up accounts isnt exactly hard. whats hard is if your bro fucks about with settings on your computer resulting in you not being able to set up music streaming from your pc to your 360.

also, once those accounts are set up, you'll rarely have to actually log in to them, it'll do that itself

edit - yeah HB thats what i thought it was too.
